I really don't get this.
I am watching Ableton tutorials of Tom Cosm, and there is reallllllly fucking strange moment there.
He puts Analog in midi channel, and chooses single sine wave in Analog. Then he puts Spectrum analyzer after the Analog, and what the fuck!!!!There are harmonics in the analyzer!
Tom says like it's all ok "those are overtones".What the hell, did everything I knew is wrong? How can sine wave have overtones,or harmonics??I'm getting nuts here. I tried it myself,it's all there,I don't know what to think anymore...

simply put a distortion in it, and you will get overtones

| I don't want to put a distortion on it,I simply ask how it is possible.
It was a clean case of sine wave in Analogue,he put Spectrum after it and there were overtones. If you have Ableton, try this and you will get the same (I tried it several times).
I don't understand what is going on.

not possible. A clean sine wave has no overtones. Throw a sine oscilator and watch in analyser.
Than put a distortion to it and that way you produce overtones to a sine, also than visible in analyser. Without distortion not possible (on a sine).

that is pretty odd indeed. Just tried it in analog and it does indeed show overtones just as happened with tom cosm.

Maybe there is an "analog" alorithm at the synth's output or something like that to emulate distortion. |

That's not good to hear.. This also happens with other Ableton synths.. what are the real implications? I believe this will be constantly coloring the sounds, but is it bad, or just different, as in being the character of the instrument?
Also, is this common due to being a virtual instrument, or is it common in hardware equipment as well?

Truely pure sinewaves are not as useful as you might think, being exceptionally difficult to mix properly. Our ears did not evolve to make sense of pure single-frequency tones. Besides that, there is no 'good' or 'bad' in this case (IMO), and to use this as an excuse not to produce good-sounding music would be pathetic. Sorry if that sounds harsh!

I can't speak for hardware I've never analysed, but I do know that the Akai hardware samplers have a great-sounding sinewave that is anything but pure.
