you just open the VSTi (that making the sound) and sending midi notes from the synthisyzer to the cubase |

the "Synthisyzer" sending only midi pulses to the Cubase. VSTi-nstruments making the sound but not playing untill they get the midi pulses from external equepmant like "Synthisyzer".
when you play on the synth the midi pulses recieved by Cubase and Cubase playing the VSTi sound. |

Here's a full answer:
Synths have 2 modes of operating. Local On and Local Off. Local On means that the synth generates it's own sound. Local Off means that it only sends and receives MIDI information.
Use Local On when you want to send MIDI data to the computer AND hear the internal sounds of the synth. Most sequencers echo back MIDI data, which means whatever the computer receives it sends back to the synth. Sometimes you can hear both internal sounds and computer sounds this way, quite amusing :) Local Off only send the MIDI data, so you can use it for VST instruments, and also for internal sounds. In the sequencer you set it to a MIDI channel, and then whatever you send is echoed back to the synth. So instead of playing the sound directly, it sends it to the computer and then receives the Note On MIDI command and plays the sound from the synth.
Usually when working with computers, Local should be set to Off. |

here's another full answer:
MIDI stands for [search google] it is a way of connecting musical instruments and/or controlling them. when you "control" the synth with cubase, imagine as Cubase is a guy who knows to read score and to play it on the synth. i mean synth is the source of the instrument (guitar) and cubase is the player (Paco DeLucia) at your side.
so when you setup the instrument, u actually make cubase understand the synth's way of playing.and then cubase only sends instructions with timecode in the form of "do A for T time with F force at T time". example: "note_on A3 velocity 120 timecode 200 channel 1" and then after a few micro/milliseconds: "note_on A3 velocity 0 timecode 500 channel 1"
what makes synth play the note A3 from timecode 200 to 500 (velocity 0 - stop playing) with the patch set on channel 1.
this means cubase tells the synth what to do, how to do, when to do. there's many types of MIDI orders that synth can receive, read in the MIDI protocol description.
so cubase has a database of languages for many synths (device drivers/modules) and when you setup a synth - you make cubase know this language. any other questions ?
