P.A. is Public Address .. as in a PA system or a Public Address system that is used to amplify the voice of the speaker via a Microphone..an amplifier n speakers .. just like what o.zen said

PA does also (coincidently) stand for public address in relation to the sound equipment but also to the personal appearance of the act.
eg A live PA (personal appearance) from Deedrah using a 20K PA (public address).
I believe that it use goes back to the rave days - especially in the UK - when an act would make a PA and often just mime or maybe do a vocal ontop of a track rather than play live. This was very common for top 40 acts of the time in commercial nightclubs and became standard at raves.
It sort of mutated to cover all apearance by acts at dance events - being suitably vague as to whether someone was playing live or just dancing around a keyboard a bit and trying to look busy while a DAT played...
All the phrases have their history a long time ago when they meant something slightly different - but have passed into the language (like MC - which actually stands for Master of Ceremonies - from the days when the MC would be the host of the evenings entertainment instead of some annoying b**tard who talks too much.. er.. maybe things haven't changed that much after all...).
