Hey

Haven't been here for a while...

I Wanted to inform you guys that I have written a nice Sidechain tutorial for Cubase SX3 (only SX3, ATM. it won't work in Cubase 4 – because of a nasty bug in C4 has... anyway, all the info regarding this, is in the doc)

I'm sure that it will be helpful for you psychedelic heads as you mainly work with Phat kicks and even Phatter basslines...

This technique is known for a while now, and while it is a "side rode" for achieving true sidechain in Cubase (cause Cubase won't Sidechain natively - ATM) - it WORKS. Many folks won't engage with sidechain because they are not sure what it is and whether it is or it isn't helpful for them. Nonetheless, it IS helpful and likewise important in the production/mixing process.

I hope you will find some benefit from this technique (and I'm sure you will!)

Hey guys. If you don't understand Hebrew, and don't want to wait for a translation, I found a video of a method of sidechaining on youtube.

It works for me. Check it out:

If you don't have the compressor used in the video, (I didn't), you can get Vanilla Compressor from Chunkware for free here
http://www.chunkware.com/?page_id=4

It can do sidechaining the same way.

Shalom everybody!

Thanks a bunch Ariel G I'm looking forward to reading it.

Saf,

Thats the same video I tried going by. I even bought the same compressor used in that video. I'm just having second doubts if I'm doing it right or not. When I try doing it, it doesn't seem to make much of a difference in sound.

osker246,

You'll only notice the difference if a kick is played at the same time as a bass note. If it's right you'll notice you can aways hear your kick clearly because it is reducing the volume of the bass automatically.

Try doing a kick rush over top of a bassline, and tweak the settings so it doesn't sound like mud.

Ahh ok,

I really didn't understand what side chaining was in the first place. But now that you explained it in easier terms I notice the difference now. Thanks

For me the whole reason why I would want to side chain would be so I could do ducking and place the kick and bass on top of each other, Is there any real way to accurately do this outside of using Logic? (I had a friend who could do the ducking in logic really well)

I've tried Colin's tutorial using the waves stuff, I've used the TC stuff, and none of them actually work the way I want them to, and Xyla rigged up something in the logic environment to actually do it perfectly... Since I don't use logic, I've been dying to actually get it to do that in Cubase... Maybe I'm not doing it right, but I've tried adjusting every setting for hours on end and still encounter a bit of an issue once you put the kick and bass on top of each other...           An Eagle may soar, but Weasels don't get sucked into jet engines.

WHat do u want to do???

Colin´s tutorial is pretty clever imo. Similar to the video, but Colin used stereo group instead quadro one.

For TC is even easier. Put the "side chain trigger plugin" at kick channel, put the Compressor Desser at bass, tweak some knobs and u get a side chain.

For easy understanding, I suggest to make a 4 beats synth(a big 4 beat note from any synth), and place the compressor at this. Now u can feel exactly the compressor working while there´s signal at kick.           LOADING...
