When using Sidechain compression, should one route the bass to a simple, unchanging doef-doef-doef-doef muted kick and then have a separate kick track that will be the main kick heard in the song (that might have rolls, glitchiness and other creative sequencing)?
I can understand that this would be a better bet so that the bass stays contiuously throbbing without getting overwhelemed by a kick-roll but I'm also wondering if the bass might then drown out the energy of a kick-roll if it's compressed to the main beat. |

when I sidechain my bass, I copy exactly the real kicks to a muted track with heavy lopass, so just the bass of the kick works as trigger

What I've been doing is just SCing to the main kick.
So obviously something like doef-doef-doef-doef-doef-doef-doef-doefdoefdoefdoef is going to affect the bass quite a bit. I'm going to try keep a muted channel going and see how that works, especially using the low pass idea.
Thanks, MadScientist. Another awesme tip from a great producer. |

I just run along a channel with the same kick and mute it
Its not possible with all the sidechainers i guess, but with the sidekick it works perfectly
Still able to sidechain pads, whitenoize, uplifters, atmos etc. in breaks

What's the difference then, between having a muted sidekick that's identical to the unmuted kick? Why not just make one unmuted kick an unmuted sidekick as well?

Like i said, you will be able to sidechain pads and stuff to the kick while there is not kick playing
For instance in the break

Aha, thanks man...Didn't understand at first.
My kick/bass balance is usually -5db/-7db so when you bring SC into the equastion, do you need a louder bass channel so that the compression doesn't lower the volume too much? |

During a kickroll you could run a highpass sweep on the bassline.

I dont get this question still...
why should the bass drown out the energy of the kick when just the bass is compressed with the kick as trigger?
anyway you got 2 options there...
1. just go for the 2nd-channel-muted kick-option
2. why should the bassline run during a kick-roll at all? you wont hear the bass, even hipassed, and if you dont hipass it, you just get a bassy mess

Heh, sorry, I meant the bass getting drowned out by the kick-roll. I'll try an HP or actually not having bass notes during the rolls.
Psytrance outdoor season just started yesterday, so I have a new burst of inspiration. |
