open the manual and see what each function does to the signal...then try and try
We cannot say "the truth of sidechain in psytrance basslines is setting ur threshold at -15Db, ur Attack at 0 , etc..."           Psy stuff : myspace.com/neyaprod

You can start like this:

Treshold - 0
Ratio - Inf
Attack - 0(or minimal)
Release - 0(or minimal)

Then, turn on your kick and bass and start to lower the treshold until you hear the noticable effect of sidechain compression. Then play with all these basic setting until you are satisfied.

Also, i wouldn't recommend to use sidechain compression every time, by default. I personally prefere velocity tweaks, but sometimes side-chain also.           http://soundcloud.com/aedem

Since every kick and every bass have different relations to each other I don't think you should use a preset. Also I have seen a lot in this forum that people say the release should be at zero. Not always recommended imo, because every kick and bass relate different, find the sweetspot once you have set your threshold but do keep it low....

Other than that I go with Medea, try every knob and see what it really does to the inter relation to the two.           Upavas - Here And Now (Sangoma Rec.) new EP out Oct.29th, get it here:

Is side chain compression meant to sound as if you're using a K-BB pattern with a bit of a woof before the bass notes?

My kick tails a bit over the first bass note in a rolling bass pattern to keep that doef.

I like to not sidechain the bass..

but sometimes the bass hits the kick...I only use sidechain in this case, but just a little, I stop when I cant hear the "blurrb" anymore.

Sidechain everything. I did that once, sidechained from here to there all over the place, the result was really funny and made everyone laugh...           Upavas - Here And Now (Sangoma Rec.) new EP out Oct.29th, get it here:

release is relevant. I use short release for the bassline, but a bit longer on pads, white noise...etc.
attack, the fastest possible. You want everything to duck as soon as the kick hits.
I side chain pretty much every synth part and percussion that hits on the kick. I tend to drop the bassline that plays under the kick a lot, around 6dB gain reduction. same with pads and noise effects. I am a sucker for that vacuum effect you get from sidechaining. it was always big in techno, weird it took so long for the psy-trance producers to pick it up.

Could you post a sample? I tried to do this once, and was very unhappy with the result. Imho, kickdrum doesn't deserve so much attention... (In techno tunes it does sometimes, though)           http://soundcloud.com/aedem

The kick deserves as much attention as possible for me. I want it to cut through, yet avoid using up all my headroom on parts that coincide and send the meters through the roof. Sidechaining does not have to be extreme. You can have a transparent sidechaining effect and simply help your self in the mix down. You can choose how obvious the effect is going to be and on which parts.
Anyhow:
http://www.myspace.com/discohooligans -- check Clear Skies that has a bassline that is not the typical 16th pattern, but coincides with the kick that is tuned to the same root frequency. That bassline is made up of a sub bass part and a top line, highpasssed, playing the same midi file. Sidechaining hits the sub bass part harder than the top line. Been doing that since I started making music basically.

http://www.myspace.com/nectunes --Check the Jeebuzz rmx soon to be released on Dieb Audio where the sidechaining is more obvious and all the techno dudes love it...I dropped the bassline that plays under the kickdrum about 8dB in that mix.
