as someone whos trying to teach himself i would like to know:
what is the importance of side chain compression to rolling basslines?
What exactly IS side chain compression and how is it different to appling just normal compression to something?
is it essential for basslines and is it sometimes neccessary for other aspects of a track?

side chain is useful for lots of things, specifically for basslines it's useful to duck the bassline when the kick is playing. there's a twist to sidechain compressor. the best method I found out is to use a trigger, so you can use the sidechain even if there's no kick playing.
I like to use sidechain because it allows me to put bassline notes at the same time the kick is playing without having to much frequency interference.
short explanation how to use waves c1-sc
build a kick and bassline combo. add a second kick in your sampler, call it trigger. pan the trigger hard left and the bassline hard right. create a group channel and route the trigger and bassline to it. insert the c1-sc and set it to l->r modus. use a ratio below 3:1, short attack, short release (calculate it, usually attack 2ms release 200 ms [as a starting point])
now grab the treshhold and see what it does.
why use a trigger? often while programming breaks, you might want to have the bassline without the kick. as soon the kick doesn't play your bassline could be louder without using a trigger (due to makeup gain) . sometimes I like when the bassline gains volume, but with a trigger signal it's more controllable.
try to use an eq on the trigger. higher frequencies of the kick are more suitable for sidechaining. you'll have a shorter attack as on low frequencies. try to roll of the low end and see what happens.
sorry hard to describe such things with a shorter post.

sorry 4 hijacking the thread.
do you guys use a little bit of makeup gain while sidechaining? I often use something like 2 db makeup and between breaks (when no kick is playing) the bassline gains in volume... my usual counter measure is to use a trigger. so between a break I reduce the volume of the trigger... works pretty good, but I'm interested how you folks do it. soundcloud.com/epsylohm |

now that you hijack... what is the difference between makeup gain and increasing the gain in the right gain bar? |

good question, if I remember correctly waves plugins make up gain is specific. I gotta read the docs again but I'm too lazy right now.
