Hello guys,
Yesterday I was trying to use the logic compressor on the bass with the kick signal and I got some interesting results but still I noticed something that is bothering me so I came here to ask the experts, hehehe. After configuring a nice pumping baseline I generated an output wav file for analysis and I noticed that even when I drop the release and attack levels to minimum on the compressor, the bass is still compressed after the kick stops. This is a problem since I'm creating a kbbb and my intention is to compress only the first b note. Do you think this is a latency related issue? If so this is very strange since I'm using macpro i7 SSD and an RME 400, do you have any ideas? I'm thinking about using automation instead of sidechain and see what happens. Thanks,
Marcelo. |

put a comp on bass and and route the kick to the side chain input of the compressor that lies on the bass insert of the bass channel. I don't know what you exactly mean.. maybe a too long release but I'm not sure.
If I would like to compress only the first note of the bbb I would duplicate the bass tracks ,one with only the first b note (and the sidechain compressor) and the other track without the first b ,just with the followings and without any sidechain compressor on the insert. Automation could work too but thats too much work.

Thanks for the quick reply TimeTraveller and this I believe you are right, if I spread the bass in two different tracks and use sidechain only on the one note track I will "fix" the problem, as with automation. Another way would be to duplicate the kick and use one track for output and one track for sidechain, wich I could shift the kick signal in advance. But I really would like to understand the problem. My kick lenght is half a beat so it is only activated at the same time as the first b note, it shouldn't be compressing the other 2 notes. Also the release parameter on logic compressor minimum value is not zero, it's 40 ms, do you know if this is true for all compressors out there? Thanks,

Hey Marcelo,
It is a good thing to use a muted kick or hat or something for side chaining, you can side chain things even when your real kick is not playing and stuff... you know.
Now logic's compressor has some modes, have you checked them? Opto, VCA, etc... if you change the mode you change how the compressor works, including releasing. not all modes are good for side chaining.
You can do this thing without using a compressor too! You can lower the velocity of your first bass note and set the velocity to modulate the volume and/or a filter. Great results.

Hi Alekzis, actually I'm new to logic so I didn't know about these compressor features, maybe one of the different modes will fix my problem. Thanks for the tip, I'll try it as soon as I get home.

Hey,
Logic user here.
If you are using the Platinum mode, that would be your problem. Not the fastest mode by a longshot. However, great for a "pumping," natural sound.
I recommend VCA or FET for very fast attack/release.
If that isn't your problem, make sure your kick doesn't have a super long tail. And play around with compression ratio/threshhold as well. If the kick is already started to tail off when the bass hits, you won't necessarily need super-heavy ratios and low thresholds.
Good luck.

Alright guys, the mode was the problem, hehe. Now i changed it to VCO and it's perfect. Thanks again,
