Hi All,
I've picked up the term side chaning from a couple of people lately and as far as I could gather it envolves using a group channel in Cubase to combine ur kick and bass sothat u can apply overall compression on the group. I was wondering if anyone could shed some light on the subject and also let me know if this is a widely used practice or not. Naraku |

its the way to eg compress your bass when kick plays so as not to have conflicts in frequencies-volume-etc between those two.
personally i dont use it only for kick/bass but for other things also!
its quite useful deal sometimes!
if u wanna know how its done, search on the forum for a tutorial by colin oood!
have a nice day!

A lot of light has been shed on this topic, in fact so much light that we're going blind, so i suggest putting your sunglasses on and using the search option.
cheers man

you can also use the TC Native Bundle Sidechainer + Compressor to make sidechains really quickly and simple. |

The tc native bundle is available for osx, and it includes the sidechain/compressor...
That would work in sx

Thanks for the tips guys. Its really been an enlightning experience sofar. The tutorials are pretty easy to follow and it seems to be doing the job perfectly.
I was just wondering whether it is still neccesary to use side chaining if one is not playing any bass notes at the same time as the kick.
Can anyone please give me some advice as to when to use side-chaining and when not to.
Once again Many thanks for the info sofar. |

As i see it, you can use side-chaining to solve clashes between sounds and/or to create a nice pumping effect. If your bassnotes don't coincide with the kick, you may still be looking for the pumpy thingy.

Naraku,
I personally dont side chain the bass anymore when i dont write bass notes same time as the kick. I prefer the sound I get that way, to how it sounds when it is side chained.
But it might also depend of speed of track and what kind of bassline. Just try side chain, and then without and see which sound is more to your liking; i dont think th ere is any golden rule, just see what sounds better to you.

Kewl
I'll give both options a whack. I'm currently using my Virus C for Bass and am fairly happy with the sound of my bass, but the kick and bass will probably sound more like a unit if they have the same dynamics.
Thanks guys. It feels good to share thoughts with like minded people.
