Hello.
First of all i would like to ask you,
I use pro-c as my compressor, and it should be able to receive signals in, but for some reason when i side chain my kick to it the "external" button isent lighting up and i cannot side chain it.

Right now i sidechain the kick to my eq, Thats the best result i got so far.
How do you usually sidechain ure kick n base. Sidechain to velocity, to the eq,trough a compressor?.

i always sidechain directly to the kick, (affecting amplitude) as i dont know how to sidechain to an EQ in ableton..... any idea?? sounds cool though that sidechain eq., maby good for a bassline with 4 bass notes instead of 3

I guess that depends on the daw you're working with. In logic it's pretty straight forward: if your kick's in audio, you just have to place a compressor on the bass channel and select the kick's channel on the sidechain thing on top right corner of compressor's plug-in. The other way arround, and I guess it serves any daw, is to send the kick signal to a bus channel. And the sidechain compressors should be able to detect bus sends and let you choose from one...

So, that's it basically: you compress some audio with a signal from another source, so that it gets softer or even completely silent when that other signal triggers the compressor... The advantage of this, comparing to the process you've come up with - which could however be usefull to some situations (so don't forget about that) - is that a compressor also has an envelope, that makes that bringing the volume lower and then up again gain that swooping effect that's become so famous on the psytrance scene. Usually a good starting point would be: no attack at all, and a very short release, something like 8ms-10ms or similar values. Then it's the usual routine with threshold values and the ratio, I prefer using a hard knee for that... Just try the settings out and you'll be done in no time. Hope this helps.

for doing an EQ sidechain in ableton you could split your bass into two channels (low and high) using an FX rack with the phase method (

) then put a sidechain comp on the low end with input from the bass.

I use this method to make multi-band sidechain compressors. useful for when you want a specific freq range of a pad to duck really quick when perc hits or something like that. imo it works really well if you set it up right.

I also had problems with pro-c a while ago.. I think it was just a matter of pressing a certain button to get it active. Not sure what it was anymore though. Check the video's on youtube about pro-c. There is one from fabfilter with a sidechaining part. I ll check it later to help you out...           soundcloud.com/supergroover

why messing around with routing ? very effective way is to put LFOtool from xfer records on your bass, and let it do the volume automation.
