Me too and a lot more elements than just the bassline and by varying amounts. Some I want it to sound like its getting sidechained, some you can't notice it, only in the extra headroom on the meters.

yeah dh,
I've been listing to your songs on myspace. Impressive. especially 'manic guru edit'. like how you man-handle that flanger.
I do notice sidechaining on elements other than bass. on some longer sweeps and percussion ect. giving that mega kick some room and bounce.
Question;
With a snappy bass that has information in the mid-range. do you sometimes use multiband-sidechaincompression to remove a bit of that mid-freqeuncy band from the other elements? (sidechainging to the bass).
I've notive how clear the mids of some professional bass sound all through the tune. even when things get busy. always hearing almost entire bass-line frequencies as if it is the most important element.

What genera does your friend make? I know that for the more classic epic trance a sidechained bass is the best way to give the throbbing subbass between each kick. In on house music uses alot of sidechained compression, in many tracks you can hear it on more than just the bass, in fact I have heard many where nearly the entire track has a sidechained compressor.
Overall it is indeed very good from giving a throbbing/swelling feel to your music, good for groovy "body music" type tracks. But I don't hear it very much in the more psychedelic generas.

My friend makes fullon.i makes also fullon. i like very much kbbb and acttualy i think just delicate side chain is needed for it. what my friend my friend did to my bassline to make it more "pro" is pretty heavy side chain. which kills the kbbb for my opinion and make it fills more like k_bb. |

Then don't use it if you don't like what it does to your sound. What you can also do is bounce a bass you are happy with and then make sure the kick and bass don't overlap. That way you can program the kick bass combo really tight without the need for side chaining.
Side chaining can work well on other things too, like percussion, pads, efx etc. Basically it can work nice on the whole band Listen to some neelix for example for heavy sidechaining

And I know that Infected Mushroom do not side chain or compress anthing - for instance.

They make other kind of side chaining - instead of using a compressor, they use an HP Filter.
The cut freq changes by the peak of the kick
There is also volume automation by the peak,
Like the 'pumping' effect heard in many dance/house tracks.
In fruity loops all of these is piece of cake.
