I'm quite sure you can side chain everything.I do it in my own all colours experiments mostly between other objects.
I find it ineresting to play with it like for instance two channels - one normal one sidechained (of the same sound)..for instance a voice sample or anything - check it out maybe you'll like it too.
Just the standard bass and kick has caught my attention to learn all posible methods the most and start here my last thread.Ah now I seee it is not the ghost thread hehe however.
And I know that Infected Mushroom do not side chain or compress anthing - for instance.

Sidechaining my bass to my kick was one of the things that gave me confidence in my kick and bass combo. It really clears things up and adds a solid groove. |

Yeah, I was a bit confused with a ghost thread part too...

What genera does your friend make? I know that for the more classic epic trance a sidechained bass is the best way to give the throbbing subbass between each kick. In on house music uses alot of sidechained compression, in many tracks you can hear it on more than just the bass, in fact I have heard many where nearly the entire track has a sidechained compressor.
Overall it is indeed very good from giving a throbbing/swelling feel to your music, good for groovy "body music" type tracks. But I don't hear it very much in the more psychedelic generas. |

if it sound good without using sidechain why using it? maybe you can still have more control with it, but it s not a must |

ridiculous. there are plenty of electronic styles like disco/indie dance/electro where kick and bass play together. sidechain is just if you are too lazy to eq properly so bass and kick occupy their own space. |

Side chaining is merely a way to remove the clashes between the kick and bass frequencies that overlap each other. So you can use any trick that you can think of to serve that purpose, not only side chaining.

I never have had a need for sidechaining in my own work. Im no pro or anything but Ive always been satisfied with proper EQ of both kick and bass, and if necessary, a band-pass or band-reject filter if frequencies are clashing. 95% of the time I never use it. Keeping the kick in the lower-low end and mid-high-midrange and the bass 'in between' the kick's peaks (if that makes sense) in low and mid ranges seems to sound good in my own experience.

I know of respected 'blue names' that have never used it.
I'm no pro either, but usually I find its not necessary. Envelope control + eq do a cleaner job for me. |

Bare in mind that sidechaining does not necessarily makes things sound better. Program your kick and bass patches carefully, EQ them carefully and then try sidechaining the bass to the kick, without changing their sound, but look at the meters to see if you've gained some headroom.
Sidechain does not have to be apparent, in some cases it can be very transparent, the same way the kick and bass would sound without any sidechaining, but if that gives you back a couple more dB of headroom, then you clearly have a winner combination.

Yup its just another tool.
I like to Side chain but thats just me.
Its not some magic application that is going to make something sound "good" that did not before.
I love how some peole think that there are golden rules that every signed producer uses.
Not every artist uses the same brushes or paint brand... yes probably a bunch of people do, but it was not like anybody got together and decited that this is how it is going to be and if you dont fallow theses rules you will never be accepted in the club.
Make art and learn techniques that help you create your vision, its that simple.

Me too and a lot more elements than just the bassline and by varying amounts. Some I want it to sound like its getting sidechained, some you can't notice it, only in the extra headroom on the meters.
