Hi guys.

I am wondering if anyone can help me find a free compressor that can do side chaining for Mac, so I guess, an AU plugin.

I am trying to switch over to Ableton on Mac for production, and I'm missing that side chained bass pretty badly.

I guess if there's no free one, then one that costs money is Ok too, so long as it's not too expensive.

Thanks a bunch
Saf

The new Ableton Live 7 will have sidechain within their plugins compressor (which will be new) and autofilter, so wait a little, and get the update...

i guess you know the tc native bundle 3.1 which has sc-comp but thats not a free one...

maybe that helps alittle...

@Saf

Are you already using Ableton? And when you say production I am presuming you mean song writing, mixing and possibly mastering. All the Ableton users I know at uni don't mix or master with it. They all prefer other DAWs which are better equipped for those processes. I don't wish to start a DAW war, Ableton is great for getting ideas down fast and has gained a huge following. But if you are already using another DAW then you might want to consider running it in conjunction with Live. If you have just bean using Live on a PC up until now then ignore all the above and get your self a decent compressor. They are such a fundamental studio tool, its worth investing in a decent one.

I'm using Live for 2 years now and i'm thinking about buying Cubase 4 now....As you said Live is so much good to get ideas down but for professional STUDIO work, there's better stuff : Logic, Cubase, Pro Tools...
Live is not a DAW, it is an instrument...           Psy stuff : myspace.com/neyaprod

@psytracked,

Yeah I meant for song writing and mixing.

I have been using Abelton on PC for a while, and about a year before with Cubase. I often think of trying them together on one track, but I haven't tried it yet.

I have gotten decent results using only Ableton somehow, here is an example:

I miss a lot of things about Cubase, but I enjoy the work flow in Ableton a lot.

Logic has its own plugin format, right?

I assume I can't just use the logic one without logic.

You are right about Logic plugins not working in anything else, but...

I'm going to disagree about Cubase ones, because I've used VB-1 in Ableton and FL Studio just by having it in my plugins directory in Windows. I thought it might not work, but it does.

VST is Steinberg's plugin format, and of course, it works in many DAWs.

I also I notice that some plugins I'm using in Ableton on OSX right now, such as Vanguard, install 2 versions, one AU and one VST. I found this odd because I thought VST was a win32 only format. My Rob Papen Blue is also VST format on OSX.

Obviously, vanguard.dll on windows is a completely different shared object format than vanguard.vst on OSX, though.

I use Protools (PC) and their RTAS/Audiosuite formats. These don't work on other DAWs. However I can use VSTs in Protools with Fxpansions VST to RTAS adapter.Interestingly they also do a VST to AU adapter.           http://www.whatacunt.co.uk/

thats funny...i tried to use those, with no sucess, its like the plugins are locked to cubase only....what i did was place the quadrafuzz and vb-1 dlls on the vstplugins folder that i use (which is not steibergs standart one)...maybe if they are left at the cubase folder...and loaded from there, it could work??
