I wanted to make a direct comparison between the original and a clone for the first time, when I heard the Audiorealism Bassline V2 Plugin.
Here is the result:
http://www.subconsciousmind.ch/cgi-bin/sclitemp3.cgi?filename=TB-303-VS-AudiorealismBasslineV2-RAW
No processing - alternating original - clone
http://www.subconsciousmind.ch/cgi-bin/sclitemp3.cgi?filename=TB-303-VS-AudiorealismBasslineV2-Dist
Distorted - alternating original - clone
More left and first, the original, more right and second, the clone.
I find the clone sounds very impressive, the first clone getting the accents a little right, but still not as cool in my ears. Overall it still sounds more like plastic, but for the price it's a good deal. The original is still more liquid, warm.
But hey, anyways. It's what YOU make of it!! This plugin certainly rocks!
To mention: my original is a little modified, I have more cutoff range (can close fully) and I have Midi In and Out, which uses a little too much power and this makes my 303 sometimes "flatter" a little. Furthermore EVERY 303 sounds different, so it is impossible for a clone to sound the same...
The distortion is the "overdrive" from cubase SX, same settings for both. Most of my music for you to download at:

Very cool. Thanks for the clips.
V2 is impressive but its just way to clean sounding. The 303 overdrives the filter quite alot on accents wich sounds really cool. Is yours modded with some kind of extra drive? Some if the sounds almost sounds like its run through an overdive pedal/plugin.
It also sounds funny on the first seq. Sounds like the filter is modded by a fast lfo, wich i bet its not.

Hi,
Yea the first sequence has that lfoish, thats the "flattering" I mentioned which comes because my midiinandout mod drains to much power.
Beside that there are no mods.. the little overdrivish has always been here, a friends 303 has that a bit less...
Phosycon has no chance compared to Audiorealism BassLine V2!
Phosycon was better than Audiorealism Bassline V1, but phoyscons accents sound like crap.
the rest is very ok much bettern than ABL V1.
but I didn't even do a direct comparison with phosycon because it so obviously sounds like a clone.

Thanx for the clips: i think it's a neat initiative to inject some objectivity into the ongoing this vs. that arguments.
But as you say, your friend's 303 has a bit less distortion. This makes me wonder, could the Audiorealism Bassline V2's sound lie within the range of normal variation among original 303s ? In other words, could it sound just like, or better than another original 303 ?

Thats difficult to answer. I would say that this "distorted" characteristic is different and the ABL can't be blamed for that.
But somehow the ABL has overall a little "plastic" like more "edgy" sound which doesn't sound familiar to me. It's maybe because I know, but I think I still can tell the "digital" sound from it apart from the "analog" sound of the original.
But to be honest... with overdrive and delay... I would possibly not hear the difference in a mix. So far it was alway very easy to tell the original apart from the rest: THE ACCENTS. No clone ever did them right. this one does it quite good.. I think they would still reveal that it's a clone for me... but I have mine for 10 years.. so kind of it's a piece of me

Ok, guys.
I updated the links. I fixed the problem with my internal power in the 303, there is still a little distortion left, but the "lfoish" is gone.. I think it sounds fatter now..
So now the comparison is more accurate. Check it out
