I think it's really up to you man. psykovsky's album has tunes where the kick is definitely not the loudest and it is a beautiful piece of art. ! |

When rolling off the bass at 30hz using Sonalksis, I'm left with a very thin bass that is at least 4dB louder than with those 30hz...What's up with that?
Either way, here's a sample of the track with the bass lowered a few dB...Is it too soft?

the kick has more high freqs than the bass, i usualy try to have kick and bass in the same frequency spectrum.
also be carefull with too much reverberaion.

Yeah, I boosted around the 2k area on the kick, I like having that "klap" to it, Hiyarant style. |

On the track I'm writing now, my kick is peaking at -6.5dB with bass at around -8dB. Synths will go up to around -7dB sandwiched between the kick and the bass.

My advice to you - stop worrying about numbers. Don't even look at those numbers. Listen instead.

i keep my kick at -6.5 more or less, and its a mistake to overdo the bass if ur listening thru the car speakers, keep it modest and if the listener wants more bass he can add it thrue the radio, sometimes peoples over do it and when ur in the car and u lift the bass from the car player it distorts or sounds like shit, keep it smooth so u can add more if u want to from ur car radio to the max but so it wont distort catch my drift?, also why not compare official releases from ur car... peace mate! |

In my current track Bass have this same peak loud as Kick but when I listen it my ears says: "The Kick is louder than bass!" So... I agree with Mike A. They are no rules ;-)

It mainly depends on the texture and mood of the track. Some tracks sound good with loud kick, while others sound a bit weird. So there is no hard and fast rule that kick should always be loud.It can be low too.
