I don't own any version of Cubase but many friends do. The ones that upgraded to C4 seem happy. There is just one major issue: C4 projects can not be opened in previous versions of Cubase. I know this is a real pain for some C4 owners that want to collaborate with owner of previous versions.

I've worked in SX for a few years now and after working with friends who have CB4 I am planning to migrate for several reasons:
The interface is polished and more slick.
The native FX plugins (delay, reverb) are very nice.
Built in side-chaining.
Native synths are nice.
Basically I'm looking to upgrade to CB4 and reduce the amount of VST plugins that I'm using, at least for a while. Simpler, cleaner, faster. |

I have worked with cb4 and i liked....The vst instruments and plug are better comparing with cb3.
I dont thing to move now for cb4 because about the new "format". I have fear that somme vst & plugins that we work in cb3 don't work in cb4.
i don't now if this is true...i never tried..
Anyone nows???? |

As far as I know the only real problem is that they dropped DX support. So if you have loads of DX plugins, you might have a problem...

All of my plugins I used when using Cubase SX 3 work fine in Cubase 4.
I'm glad I made the switch, there are a lot of things that make the workflow more streamlined imo.

Definitely! Now is the right time to upgrade, as it's very stable right now.
The two features which sealed the deal for me were; being able to drag inserts & internal side-chaining.
There are lots of other improvements as well so yes it's worth the upgrade.

get-a-fix do you mean that now you can now reorder VSTFX using drag and drop as in logic and ableton ? |

For those you could have upgraded to version 5.5 many years ago.

I-d just suggest to reconsider before upgrading to C4. I own both versions and i-m one of the unlucky ones who experimented some weird issues with C4.
I do like it very much, but i can-t really trust it. (unexpected random clics is the worst problem in my system).
There are actually a lot of different issues that have been reported, you should just have a look on cubase.net (steinberg forum). The amount of users complaining about the non-trustworthy-c4-release is impressive. Steinberg released 1 major update and 2 fixes (which were kind of emergency fixes, they even didnt pass the whole check processes), but its still not all right.
So, just to say that c4 is actually really nice... but there is a big lack of fiability compared to a ableton live, a flstudio or sx3.
you might be lucky with upgrading to c4, but it can also be a big pain in the $(#.
Maybe safer to wait one more major update and check the reports. Personaly i-m half back on sx3, working with c4 goes not too bad either, but still not as solid as sx3. ____

Nope dude, AFAIK you can't drag inserts or use internal side-chaining (you have to use other vst plugins for side-chaining) in older Cubase versions.
le barde,
That's unfortunate that C4 is unstable for you, as for me it's running solid. It probably has something to do with your setup as i know quite a lot of people who're using it without any problems.

i own cubase 4, and unless you can get a academic discount i wouldnt recomand updating to c4 just yet, wait a month or two and see if the next c4 update will fix all the annoying bugs, like clicking while looping, freeze function is broken, and alot of other bugs.
basically cubase 4.1.3 is usable but the still the bugs hurt your workflow.
also there is a lot of speculation that the next cubase 4 update is the last one, and that steinberg will fix the important bugs only is cubase 5. (or maybe not ). steinberg is famous for not giving a rats ass about the users.
anyway you can read all about it from users on cubase.net
cubase 4 has only 2 functions which where worth for me to upgrade.
1) changing the fx order.
2)mediabay, since i have a lot of samples and midi files its really comfortable to preview and drag to project in side cubase.
as for the internal sidechaining, i rearly use it because it only supports vst3 so that means meanwhile only cubase4 plugins. and personally i dont like the cubase4 compressors very much, so i still use the old method of sidechaning with other compressors.
other then that i think sx3 is much more stable, uses less memory and provides a smoother workflow (since it doesnt have so much bugs as c4).
so there are pros for upgrading but there are also cons. |
