I'd think most artists would be happy to see their tracks used in a mixset.
It's promotion for them and promotion for you... I'd say if you're worried about it than post a tracklist.

Unfortunately most DJ mix CDs don't come with a track list, so there is nothing in it for the artist since nobody will ever know who did the music.
And for the original question: I depends what you want.
If you have tracks in the live set which you wish to release via a label it definitly mustn't be public. Otherwise, why not?

Another two things I want to mention...
I went to listen to your set. It's sounding promising to me too, for my taste sometimes a bit too chaotic, but thats a matter of taste. Good work so far.
The other thing: Personally I don't find it smart to put neither DJmixes or LiveSets in one 60-70 minutes file for demo purposes.
Why? Two reasons:
First. If the tracks would be piece by piece and downloadable I would take the music to my ipod and listen to it in my car and when I go for a run. I'd start to like it, I would remember your name and you would have gained one fan.
Second. I'm in the organisation of one of the biggest Festivals in Switzerland and we have to listen to a lot of demos. We don't listen to any online demos (myspace or soundcloud etc.) in the first place, only downloadable demos or physcial CDs have a chance. If we get a CD or a download without track stops we will most likely listen to it once at best, maybe we get interrupted and we will never start it again since we don't want to fast forward or find the last position again, just too many demos and to few time. Furthermore we want to be able to tell the DJ or artist, this song great that song not so great etc. And of course if the CD or the download is in a good form members of the team will take it to the car and discover the music more likely etc...
I don't know how others handle this but with undownloadable one piece demos you'll neither gain me as a fan nor ever be booked to our festival.

Many thanks for your advice, I've now made the set downloadable and will add a couple of singles. |

And what if the live set is not one whole track after another but is made up of loops/clips; synth lines and percussion played on the fly? Like a jam session! Live. I suppose we'd probably just split the mix into 5 minute segments so a listener can jump wherever...

Yeah, this demo isn't really representative of how the mixing during performance would be. I just wanted to mix together all my tracks into a promo style. I'm hoping to add a lot of improvisation/Remixing to the set. |

I have no knowledge on the laws about dj sets.
All my dj sets are public and downloadable. Mp3, VBR 0.
They are protected, because I always add vocal tags with my dj name along the set.
Once or twice per track. It's a discret sound, it doesn't disturb the listening.... but it's there
No one else will be able to use it for self-promotion.
For artist promotion I always include full tracklist.
Artist name + track name + label.
There's no big marketing machine for psychedelic, so I think it's good to promote artists this way.
Good for everyone. |

So I've just finished writing my live set. I put a 128kbps version on Soundcloud which is currently set to private for interested promoters, but I'm wondering if I should set it to public for more exposure? Keeping in mind the quality is low, it's not downloadable and I'll probably have some new tracks by the time I play.
Thoughts?

Why not do a 10-15 min clip of it as public (maybe mix 3 different 5 min sections together so people can hear how it progresses, and also it means they will listen to the full thing and it will still have the element of surprise as the clip they here wont be the same as the full version). And then the full version private, that way anyone can listen to the clip and see what they think, then they can get in touch and you can give them access to the full version
Just an idea
