Okay all, this Kick and bass discussion is actually confusing me a little.
as we all know, Psytrance is the GOD of powerful kickdrums.
But i found this 11months old track of mine, it waked a lot of emotions and memories for my past (cheese warning) anyway. so i wanted to know, what does it take, to make a kick sound "too off"
A friend of mine, who is a cmplete house-fag (loves kickdrums saying smack, ending in just low-end.) says my old kickdrums are a nightmare, yet i enjoy them sounding a littl harsh and rough, with a touch of presence. "oomph" if you will.
Starring:
that track.
Do you actually concider this a poor mix because of the kick? or is it just different?
I can tell theres a lot of loudness in this mix compared to all my other tracks, and i got a bit curious.

I said I like it dirty, not muddy.

Personally i don't think your kick itself is all that bad... it could match the bass better but its also a older track of yours. But no i don't think your kick is messing up your mix.
I like house music too, well... electro-house/complextro more or less, but some house tracks are nice... but psytrance is like house or traditional trance music on steroids hehe so i think the kick drums helps make the difference when it comes down to the nitty gritty side of things. I find punchy works well will faster bpms and thumpy works with slower bpms so i would take that into consideration as well... i mean not to say they can't have the best of both worlds but its what ever sounds and works the best right? my 2 cents

what?!? i love psytrance as much as anyone else here on the board, but i'd never think of calling the psy kick especially powerful. especially the short duration and therefore lack of bass takes away a lot of power. imho the most powerful kicks are still found in techno. especially freetekno, but also schranz. heck, often even the kicks in modern trance or hardstyle pack more punch than in psytrance.
in your track i find the kick quite ok. a bit on the harsher side with comparatively little bass/sub, but still ok. what sounds a bit off to me in the track is the bass, but high basses such as this one are common fullon. (especially isreali fullon).

This is one of my favorite Kicks, it sure is REALLY heavy.
I can't figure how to make such a powerful mid'end, dark and heavy, without making it "thump thump" like a normal house-kick, i'ts so hard.
High basses can sound quite intense. I don't usually use them these days, they have a little "arrogant" sound.

sound 100% like one of the kick you can make with the mbase , but even with the mbase you need lot of fine tuning and processing to get there..(with top notch equipment if possible for best results ) best /easiest is to use samples as someone will already do all the hard work for you unless you wanna spend hours on kicks
you will find that style of kicks in most sample libraries i guess.
if you wanna synthesis them, bassically the attack is a kind of filtered noise (that can have that delayed thingy like on claps) and the sine pitch bend just go from mids/low mids to low end but you will have a hard time to match the phatness /caractere , that box sound really phat but it s fu,kcing tricky to get great kick out of it as it need good processing, or it give you some kick that where used around 2000 like in some paps tunes

What's crucial for this kind of kicks is a rather long bend time, as PoM already said. Play around a little.
A 'mild' attack that's layered with some white noise and you should be on the right way.
The rest depends on your EQing skills.

Kick sounds fairly typical for a Psytrance track to me certainly not cheesey and I like the track myself.

I do in some cases. Use the Pro-Q for that purpose as I think it has the best sounding high pass filter..my other EQs being the Sonnox, Softube and Waves ones.

Peace out.
Although I do create all my kicks in Ultrabeat so they are all tuned where I set them to be, its just that some envelope settings that make the kind of sound that I want, mean that there is not enough bottom end as I would like and I find that a higher slope HPF works better than simply boosting the fundamental with a low shelf EQ band.
There's more than one way to skin a cat and all that.

@woodster yes but not a highpass a bell at the freq in the lows I want boosted with a very narrow Q. Then I remove the first really resonant freqs (if needed) in the sound with a very narrow but deep notch.

if you want great kick with no hassle buy metrum and be done forever with kicks..simple as that.. many friends into full on use it..i finaly bought it while it was on sale.. a bit expensive for someone that would want to use it just for the usual psy kicks.. but it can save lot of time !

The good ol' "listening to the kick all day-syndrome" eh?
It is a goa track, right? Who cares about the kick sound on a goa track anyway? The first part is not very interesting, the second is better.
