>>> Why so many people in this scene have an impression that they can go away with something like that? <<<

I've very bluntly asked this question to some label heads and the answers returned were either :

"I've been doing this for longer than all the other labels out there so I know what I'm doing"

or

"Artists want their music released so I'm doing them a favor by releasing it"

IMO... ppl go on an ego trip when it comes to this position. being a label head was the end of the road for a veteran artist... nowadays is the beginning of the road for startup kids and DJs who want unreleased music. the only way to grow is to release more, and the only way to release more without going at a loss is to not pay "some" artists.

its as corrupt as any other industry out there. oversaturation just created more opportunities to take advantage of it.

There is no way out of this problem other than a handful of labels that have very strict quality and regional control. You wont find many of those non-paid artists mentioned in previous threads on those labels. (sorry guys but its the truth)

Stop whoring your music! If you value it that much then give it away for free on your own web-page and use the promotion to your advantage.

If you're looking to make a living from sales it's not going to happen this way... best way to get paid is to go Live and on tour or learn all you can about e-commerce and go digital.

That is not the point, the point is that labels are offering things that are not real.

It is a LEGAL CONTRACT, not a toy or game.
People would not mind to get released if they need promotion and stuff, but, all the lying and signing agreements that are not beeing respected is another thing.
Cmon, arists get to the point where they don't even get 1 singles copy of the release.

Shivlink for example, lie about sending even a copy of the compilation that is MENTIONED IN A LEGAL CONTRACT!

Now, if all labels believe there is no law behind them, then, they are deffinetly pirates.

I am a 32 year old experienced producer, I would never come like that in a forum if I did not find this attitude of labels clandestine.

Now, you can see this attitude possitive or just beeing a small lamb asking to be released.           www.myspace.com/enertopiapsy

Enertopia... im sorry that this happened to you but if you're taking this stand you need to follow through. You have the contract...sue their ass!!!

I reply here because I believe when it comes to a forum, bitching is useless. creating awareness is all you can do here.

If its a matter of ethics then someone needs to take the bull by the horns. If the producers who were cheated feel the same way then band together and take these labels on.
If you don't this thread will just pass on to page 2 like the many before it.

Oh yes, you got the point, it is only to warn the people of a situation they will go through dealing with some labels.

My point is, ask the label if they can stand behind this contract before they say yes.

Also, as an artist, add some lines protecting you against these situations, add a line saying that if the payment is not recieved 10 days after the original due date, there will be 5 dollars per day charge.
If you really would have to go to a legal matter, the interest should be considered.

For me, personally, found the situation of not sending a copy of the compilation, and above all, lying and saying that is have been sent, for me it is extremely rude, it is better to say that it has not been sent and will do it as soon as possible as agreed, and recieving the compilation while I am typing these words.

I will buy it, actually, Im very excited of having such a good compilation, but c'mon.
ScumHead, WHERE IS MY COPY BIATCH. You are really a cheap MF.( or just LAZY???.....NOT!).

sorry , but I think you guys can kiss your money goodbye .. that is , if the label guys have already decided not to pay you .. like most places in the 3rd world .. you , from whatever part of the world will find it very tough (i say impossible) to initiate any sort of legal action and recover the amount .. hell .. bill gates still hasn't found a way to stop piracy here .. what u hippies gonna do ?

or maby .. it is a geniune problem and they`l pay u later when they are in a position to do so .. next time do a payment up front thing maby ? ..best of luck

I hope they come here and explain anyway ..

meanwhile .. Im off to microwave some popcorn ..

you can compile an 'ideal contact' that artists can refer to when signing one they haven't read before.

systematically put together a list of labels, defaulted payments, artists cheated .... in one database. When its all put together you find links between labels, irresponsible artists etc etc. things you wouldn't have seen otherwise.

Example....
the last 3 labels that have defaulted and brought to light on this forum have been under the same regional distribution network and manufacturer with a common artist in 2 cases. maybe there is a link. or shivlink! muuuahahaha ... done for the day and going home. cheerio.

Theres a lil bit of sense in what everyone has to say. I honestly feel its time you guys woke up and smell the coffee. The music industry is one of the most cut throat businesses there is, period! If you actually think your gonna make a lot of money as an upcoming artist, label, Dj or promoter, banish the thought! the chances are extremely remote !

Its high time all of you got Nine to Five jobs that pay the bills if the music is not. I have my own label and i paid all my artists on my cd, with money i have earned from my regular job. Why? Only because i felt i had to give something back to this unique form of music that i really love and hence the idea of my label was born.

Its the dumbest business decision that i have made with my savings, but thankfully because of my job i have a regular income and can afford to take a shot at doing something i love parallely to my boring day job.

Just my two pence, its sad that shit like this has to happen but its gonna keep happening!           (Rudraksh / Amaris records)
VA "DEEP FRIED" compiled by Dj Shiva Moon out now on Rudraksh Records!
VA Ahimsa double cd compilation out now!
VA " Fry or Die " under construction!

it has nothing to do with this matter of selling tracks, but i could not stop noticing the speach is familiar to me..i have recieved mails like this in the last month..should i stop care?

you know, there is an old saying that goes like this:
foll me once, shame on you, foll me twice, shame on me - and this tottally aplies to me.

Enertopia, i just hope the situation somehow solves, and you take some lessons of all this story.
All the best on future releases.          ...

fukkk it guys ... n move ON
Come on guys , U knew u wudnt get paid whn u didnt ask fr cash upfront ... no point crying in public laundry room .

Everyone else , There are way better ways to get ur music to ppl ... This way u can avoid getting used up by labels ... and thy dont have to do favours.

For eg, --> 6362Metaforce, triplag radio , Babagnoush , Dark

Come on stop being whiners n get a day job or a girlfriend .... it will be the best when its just a hobby u do whn u are stoned ... if u wanna live on this ... Oh jeez ur living in a parallel universo.

As far as Shivling goes , i think thy are not half as bad as u are portraying here... Maybe we shud wait n see wat the label has to say for themselves.

peace

not sure whats happened with payments & all, but that sad, but i know Nick personally & as far my experience goes he is not going to cheat you with your money, be assured, probably later.......

Better would be the label to come up here & answer.

Maybe all the points I read have a lot of sense, there is a lot of people thinking that handling a label is an easy way to promote himself and the fact is that isn't too easy after all, even more in this scene.

From the other hand, I can do understend to the artists due that he is doing a job that should be paid and the fact that there is only a small group of labels that you could work in a serious way reduce the chance to work with them at the first place, just for the fact that we have a lot of labels and artists around.

In this particular case, it's hard to make a point of view becuase I dont have the enough details to make it and I wasn't related with the deal but I hope that this situation somehow solves for both parts, label and the artist.
