Just thoughts...
What is the main purpose of all studio-monitors? To sound good? No. To make a mix that will translate well to any kind of audio system, yes?
Say, you have 2000 euros. You can get a pair of not bad monitors for that price.
Also, for that money you can get, say, 5 or 10 pairs of very different speakers, from different manufacturers and different power, and different quality, and a couple of different headphones.
For sure, it's a mess to have all that speakers plugged, and to switch between them. And, certainly, a 2000 euro monitors are a nice piece of gear and it's a pleausure to work on them.
But, how do you think, which setup would give you more chance to make a mix, that will translate good to all kind of systems?

Once you know your tools, you have the most chances that your mix will translate well everywhere. It is not a rule that monitors do not "sound" good when you play your favourite music.
Knowing your tools I mean - knowing what you hear. It includes the listening space, the monitors and your mixing skills.

My mixes are getting better since I got my monitors at the beginning of the year.
You settle into the sound and begin to understand what they are telling you.
When I listen on other speakers, I am satisfied overall, but might notice something mixed badly - I believe this to be a characteristic of the speaker - a peak that amplifies a specific problem.
When I go back to my monitors, the problem is there, but for whatever reason I didn't identify it.
For me, learning speakers takes time. I know some professional engineers can stroll into any recording studio with a reference CD, give it a listen and then know all the pros and cons of the system they'll be working with.
Having 2 MAYBE 3 sets of speakers could be beneficial, but 5-10 pairs is ludicrous. You'll confuse yourself, never be able to learn them, they'll take up loads of space and cause spaghetti cable nightmares, create a weird shifting soundstage and no doubt a few unforeseen acoustic problems. |

I'm working with one pair of monitors + headphones and never going to mess around with 20 speakers, but theoretically... don't know. Monitors are something you should "learn", but if you have a lot of different speakers, you don't have to "learn" them, you just like the sound or not. That's the point.

The lower end of speakers (in terms of cost)
Are hyped in certain areas to cover the lack of accurate frequency reproduction.
They'll sound more like hifi speakers than monitors the less you spend and perhaps will sound more enjoyable than critical.
A matter of taste. |

Monitors at that price will make your mix sound good on pretty much all sound systems.
5 sound systmes vs ALL sound systems, easy choice really And you won't have to switch between 5 systmes testing them on everyone and having to constantly readjust when it gets out of wack on others. It's a far bigger hassle than you are currently picturing I think
Go for monitors, you will not regret it

Maybe with a lot of work comparing and adjusting to make it sound good on all those cheap speakers you will get it to sound good on your average €200 speaker.
Problem is that cheap speakers will not be very accurate and bring out all the details in the mix, so how will it sound on a good set of monitors or quality hi-fi?

i would say definitely go for a decent pair of monitors. don't bother with hogging excessive equipment. it will just make your working area more uncomfortable.
what would also help is some very basic and critical acoustic treatment.
i've recently spent more than 1/3rd of my budget on room treatment and the rest on the monitors and accessories ... still awaiting delivery, but i'm so itching to feel the difference.
Good Luck!!
