So after a pretty long break, I'm starting to get back into production again. I had this track sitting around for a few years that I decided to finish while I was on vacation. I set a hard deadline for myself and whatever I have by midnight on Sunday is what I will put up in public. So here it is. Constructive criticism is welcome and appreciated. After resting my ears for a couple of days, I already know a few things I need to tweak. Mainly, the pads/strings in the 2nd part need to be quiter. And I need notch out some harsher frequencies from certain percussive elements.

I'll have another go at mixing this track in a few weeks, taking into account some things you guys will certainly point out (still getting used to my listening environment).

thank you.

@jizy, i don't think it's possible to automate something like this. it's probably just some loser who keeps refreshing the latest tracks page and just pasting the same text for every track that gets posted (check his comments page). fucking spammers.           https://soundcloud.com/dead-end-dance

Wow, nice! Technically I cant say much because I am listening on my shitty headphones, but I wouldnt make the pads quieter, they sound good to me, and also no need for notching. The only thing I would change is make the kick a bit more snappy, it sounds just a tiny bit muffled to me.

Otherwise very professional sounding and musically great (except that the break and pad come in out of nothing, the transition could be smoother or announced with some effect or whatever)           Check out my album: http://www.ektoplazm.com/free-music/gay-satanic-hippie-tiefenrausch

yeah, i think you are right. initially, i wanted it to be such a sudden transition. but i think the track will flow better if i make that transition smoother. thanks.           https://soundcloud.com/dead-end-dance

ok, so i fixed a few things. then pulled down all the faders and did a new mixdown giving myself about 7dbs of headroom. and then did some ghetto mastering for the first time, which was an interesting experience:

I am only listening on shitty headphones (again...), but the new mix seems much much tighter and better than before! And its not just the increased loudness, it sounds phat. Well done!           Check out my album: http://www.ektoplazm.com/free-music/gay-satanic-hippie-tiefenrausch

Yes second version indeed sounds much better. Kick might be fatter though, more techno-like. Kick and bass are dominating to much in the mix, compared to leads and fx, which are almost hidden somewhere behind. Bring more music out

man, this is tricky. i was checking the mix on 4 different devices as i was doing this: studio monitors, pc speakers with a sub, good headphones, and a shitty headset, and naturally the balance is pretty different on all of them. on the bounce i did before this one, it felt like the percussion and the fx were dominating the mix, so i reversed the balance, but seems like went a little too far the opposite way.

also, i'm starting to lean toward just replacing that kick entirely. this is an old track and i just wanted to finish it without really radically changing whatever i was trying to do with it several years back. but i think putting a wider deeper kick and pushing the bass further in the mix would put even more "tech" in the style i'm kind of going for.

thanks a lot for the feedback, guys.           https://soundcloud.com/dead-end-dance

tried to replace the kick with a deeper techy one, but couldn't really make it work. i don't know if i just got so used to hearing this track in the way it is now, but everything i've tried just sounded... wrong.

so i tweaked the same mix some more and then had another go at mastering. is this any better?

on the monitors and speakers it sounded fine, but on shitty headphones the highs are kind of harsh and exaggerated.           https://soundcloud.com/dead-end-dance

made some very minor changes. did another mix changing the balance, as makus suggested.

calling this one done:
