Is it a common thing to do between DJs
1) to exchange files;
2) to answer questions like "what was it?" (meaning the name of the artist whose track has just been played) ?

What is the percentage of DJs who try to keep it secret what they are playing?

I have no problem letting people know what I play if they ask.

I think DJs that try to keep their tracks secret are depending more on their "killllleeer tracks" to get them bookings rather than any actual skills. The best DJs I have heard have no problems telling people what their secret dancefloor weapons are.

Now giving copies of all their secret weapons to people is a different story. Let the others find it and buy it for themselves.

i disagree...im not a dj, but if a dj tells every1 what the killer tracks are then every tom, dick & harry will download those tracks and make a mockery out of the whole thing!

If somebody wants to download it and play an inferior-quality version of it, that is THEIR problem. They only make a mockery out of themselves.

Anyways, playing tracks that nobody else plays does NOT make the DJ a good DJ, IMO. Having their own individual sound/style/selection that nobody can copy is far more important.

Somebody may play one or two of my favorite tracks that I love to play, but I guarantee that they won't sound identical to me over the course of an entire set.

That is what I listen for in a DJ when I go to a party...that they have a style of putting their set together that other people do not have.

Some DJs play all "unreleased killlllerz!!!!" but sound exactly like a thousand other DJs out there. Some play tracks I know and have heard but put them together in new ways and make a new story. Those are the people I will go to see.

Some people defend the worth of DJs by saying they are the conduits between the artists and the audience... but how can this be true when it is standard practise for the DJs to never inform that audience of what it is they are playing?
