I’ve been producing, composing and analyzing music for about 12 years now, Psy-Trance in particular. Throughout the experience I went through hours of sitting in front of a computer, obsessed with the idea of sound creation and sound synthesis.

The best music imo was always analog, because of its unpredictable nature. With analog I am not only talking about the use of real instruments. It’s more about a feeling within the music. It’s obvious that a guitar would have a greater significance than a digital lead sound filled in with a mouse, cause of the feeling that the guy put in while playing. Also the natural harmonics that the combination of guitar strings create.

So you can grip the reality that when composing digital music, the difficulty level rises and more effort is required to get to acceptable results. The only question is How ?

Like a real snare-drum we would see that each hit is different from the one before, cause every time it’s hit in different locations at different velocities. Now I am not saying that throughout a trance track of 8min each snare or kick should be different, but it does help to get closer to that analog sound. Creating 32 or 64 loops also helps a lot. Our short term memory almost expires after that so even though the loop starts again we would perceive it as different, than before.

Building loops, throwing them together and extracting elements through time is a way to compose a track – but again takes away the analog feel of the music.

Following the flow that drives our existence is the way to go imo, the flow that is within you. It’s all about what you imagine, that will come next. Deep down we know it, being exposed to so many tracks in our lives. Creating the sound is the effort.

Out of the silence the track should start, and the flow should be continues until the end of the track, being one entity of energy. The more different sounds you use, the better and more interesting the track would be, ironically contradicting with the fact that you should keep it simple.

The listener should never realize he’s listening to music, it should be mesmerizing.
Concentrate on what analog is when composing keeping every hit and sound different from the one before and soon you will have a monster, growling throughout existence.

Music is not a robot.

Some things are easier to do in digital, some things are easier to do in analogue. Some things sound better in digital, some things sound better in analogue.

The analogue vs. digital debate is like flogging a dead horse and not really relevant in this day and age. It ultimately comes down to the vision and skill of the person behind the gear, more than it does to the gear itself.           http://hermetechmastering.com : http://www.discogs.com/artist/Gregg+Janman : http://soundcloud.com/babaluma
