Alien 303 for leads I've used a bunch. For basslines, I've heard some good ones. The basslines that come out of Alien303 are more in the background than a lot of people like though. Don't think it can make super punch, in your face bass.

I used it on my song - Aliens

for that kind of sound it's perfect.          www.musicproductionnatural.com || www.facebook.com/djamoeba | facebook page

look,
about the alien, each to his own.
I just prefer having more control. like an attack curve for example.. i just find it hard to customize a good bass with it.
plus+ the idea that it is advertised as 'hey, this is the vst for makin psy-trance bass' kinda repels me to not using it.

as for using in-built sequencer notes, i like it.
like with audiorealism bassline,, it sound cool when you have that slides and accents and all.
With midi it's a tedious mission to do all that.
Plus+ earlier years i've fooled around with a older version of propellerhead reason. only had 4 channels with built-in note sequencing. i made some crazy tunes with it.
ps. i was googling for images of the reason version i used way back. can't find any.. (by memory i recall it being a colorful '1 window' 4channel "daw") maybe 9years ago. maybe more. im 29 btw.
i remember you could do some delays and panning and it was the 1st daw i ever used that was able to record my automation. i was like WOW, advanced for its the time.. i mean, jumping from fasttracker.
im dwelling offtopic,
but somehow ,for some reason, Reason(daw) got left behind the mainstream. also cakewalk was on top for awhile before cubase made a revolution. Now cakewalk is at least competing again with their sonar.

303 analog will never disappear. Slap some reverb on and you have a bonified instrument.

Chili seems to have the right amount of sustain for me. Baked beans gets too much noise in the signal.           http://soundcloud.com/ascensionsound

hate alien 303, sounds really plastic to me but it could be good if you like plastic sounding acid riffs.

i prefer squelchyness!

get a 303 or a xoxbox to really nail the acid sound.

failing that, abl2 or phoscyon.

patterning on the internal sequencer is better for me and it is more fun!

except when i do 32 step patterns etc, then i will use midi.

If you really want the top quality envelope, attack as hard as possible, nice strong sustain ...

use Beans ! Even gives you glitchy fx sometimes           Upavas - Here And Now (Sangoma Rec.) new EP out Oct.29th, get it here:

If not using an in built sequencer hand quantise rather than snap to grid the end of notes - this is nearly always a good idea, but especially important when the synth in question doesn't have a controllable release stage.           .

depends on your synth. in abl2 and phoscyon glide is overlapping notes while accent is high velocity.
