Concerning presets:

When I'm imagining what kind of sound I want to make, sometimes I click on random presets in the database while banging on keys. Sometimes an init patch. In both cases I'll sit there and tweak around with the knobs, etc. until it sounds wierd and/or to my liking. Sometimes I like to "lock" parameters I like and copy the unlocked rest onto other presets just to see what happens. Or mess around with Randomize with some things locked and unlocked. On my Virus I have a couple of banks of presets on my Virus Snow for quick access in a live set. I always save my presets.

Presets are your friend.

That is why I usually don't like presets, they just aren't quite the sound in me head.

I like to think of a sound and be able to turn all the knobs into place before playing a thing, because if I play a different sound I lose the one in my head!

so true, couldnt say better.... i like presets as long they´re my own .... everythings else is just confusing and leading into other directions imo. anyways, matter of taste i guess.....

nothing bad in using presets imo if you are into mainstream sounds ,depends what kind of music you make there is not much presets for experimental and psychelic stuff ? for sure it ll take more time to find a good one to tweak than starting from a init patch .
i find lot of full on boring cause they just use their virus like a expander ,too much dance presets and on the other side lot of killer tracks released on twisted for example would have never existed if they were using presets ...some of the synths used in these tracks don t even have patchs memory

The intro sound to Hallucinogen: LSD is a preset from a Kurzweil K2000, and it is well-known that Shpongle has used large chunks of demos of sample CDs and released them as their own music. Even the most famous Twisted artists are users of presets; there's nothing wrong with it, it doesn't mean you're less creative and just because someone makes all their own sounds, it doesn't automatically follow that their music is better than the music of someone who uses presets - in fact it doesn't automatically mean that the music is good at all.

you pick some good examples but lot of tracks released on twisted since the begining have killer synthesis and fx or maybe you don t hear it the same?just listen beast-spawn for example ,using only preset it s very limiting but there is nothing wrong with it but glad not everyone do it in a music that is all about synthesis
i dont consider myself good in synthesis but if we were all good in it for sure psytrance would be better, if we were all using preset it would just make it worst imo

It's not that simple.

It all depends on how the presets are used.

yes its a uselss debate, my point it s better to know how to use a synth , it can only help ,it s like learning a instrument, and it s the psytrance instrument .. in a way. it s frustating to don t know how to translate the sound in your head into a synth ,just for that it worht it

Whatever sounds good is great! I know how to use everything because i had to learn because i thought that the greatest producers on the planet use the best quality outboard gear, the reality is that the greatest producer uses whatever sounds the best! There is no law in music you just need some theory and lots and lots of practice!

my 2 cents

So the moral of the story is that it all helps

all that ^
and i usually record knob tweaks on the vst as i go. sometimes changing the waveform on the go.
But yes,, I also pick a preset to get a tune started. afterward i start changing it beyond recognition

Even more so you can argue Koxbox entire sound is basically presets from korg prophecy.
In the end who cares if it works.
The reason though to program your own synths is there just isn't enough presets for this style of music.
I do think its a good idea to seperate the process of composition from that of sound design. Build up your own library of nice sounds while not composing so when you are composing you can just flip through to find some cool sounds.

well i think presets just is good to dont forget how did you made something..

Use presets is good, but know how the synthetizer works is better

I often find it difficult to blend presets with my sonic image if all the other sounds are built from scratch, i guess my way of building sounds are different from the manufacturer of the synths way of doing it.. I often find the presets a bit too good..

I also think it's more fun to design sounds from scratch.. much more flexibility, and a feeling of satisfaction when i manage to get turn the ideas i have in my head in to life by tweaking.. But i don't mind using presets and/or loops if it sounds right.. Just to add a little touch/flavour of your own - it is a bit awkward when you listen to a song and can sort out all the untreated presets at once =)

Ive started a track thinking of this post.
I want to make the hole of it in Kontakt using only samples and presets, but mostly samples, something like collage, not psytrance, something easy danceable and listenable
When ready ill post it here for sure

for me, using a preset as it is, is like choosing a name for my trak from a database of possibly cool names for traks.
