I use presets.
If I come across something which I particularly like, but is also particularly distinctive - some really intricate fx preset say - I just switch the oscilators to something else, and normally it sounds completely different, but just as good.
Another quick way is to use a synth that allows a degree of randomization on a click, so you keep the intrinsic character of a patch you like, but develop a different sound to it.
I'm also a fan of synplant, which can produce an extraordinary array of sounds, very easily, and inspire completely different directions too.

to make music you dont need to be synth programmer
with that personally i do like sometimes to NOT make music but prepare presets for future tracks. but i could live without it. melody and groove is what counts much more to me.
less true on psy.. where you can use almost same midi but the preset will make all the difference in the world.
p/s preset browsing is almost as time consuming as to make your own once you understand every button www.sattelbattle.com

I use them too.
Most of the times, I start new tracks by playing with good sounding presets.
When I'm playing I have ideas and new sounds pop into my mind, then I'll start tweaking.
I spend many hours selecting, colecting and arranging sounds on my synths.

Try to innovate fuckers...
This is not rock nor pop... this is not just a genre in which you get to play your synth.
this is about tweaking the sounds and crafting shit, and making it psychedelic and twisted enough to create new concepts and fiting the right mood / tempo / subgenre you are working on.
One of my worst noob fails was to browse synths presets in search of the "perfect preset" for my current track... that does not work (for me at least).
Specially in psy, there ain't much presets that will sound "psychedelic" you obtain this by crazy modulations and synthesis techniques that require a deep understangind of the sound.
so yes, shame on you lazy fucker.
* don't take my F words as an offence please i'm just rambling. |

I have a deep understanding of the sound.
Sometimes I just need a prod in the right direction.
Nothing lazy about my productions mate, hard fucking work, all the way.

Which softsynth can produce pads similar to Atmosphere's or UltraFocus?
Aciduss I tweak my MicroQ a lot! =)
Maybe i explained a bit wrongly in my first post: I can't get so fat analog-sounding pads anf leads from softsynths, thats why i use sample-presets-based stuff like Spectrasonics etc.
This is nothing about laziness here)

You can make a UNIQUE and AWESOME track just with presets! ahah
I think that being excessivly concerned with teaking removes all the magic and inspiration.
It's getting more and more dificult to innovate.
The best possible achievable sounds... have
already been made! |

You can make an awesome track just by using samples, but that's besides the point.
It is in the genre's nature to push on for new sounds. Some get into it more than others, but for me psy-trance is as much about the music as it is for the sound design. I like a great single saw arpeggio that plays the right notes, as much as I like a ripping single note drone, morphing and twisting as it evolves.
Its all about what you are going for and what get's you excited when you are making tunes.

agree.
But to me, it's all about...
the right sound at the right time, be it a preset or not!
But it's always nice to pull out something new, to push the scene forward...
and immediatly being copied by millions of other producers!

i don't make psytrance 0O)
Indeed, for decent psytrance track of course it's much better to use some new and interesting sounds...

I used preset in synth only in my very first experiment as far as I can remember,on the first night/track I could generate an audible tone from cubase hehe.
I always start from scratch ,default or innit, but I will try to use presets in future maybe too.
I use presets sometimes so far only to learn and understand from .So for sure I have copied lots of settings etc
Though I like the way when almost all is self made.

i exactly use ONE single preset and this is called init, it´s gettin that damn cool usually after tweaking a little bit. and quess many synths even dont have it......
have a look for this, it´s possible gettin the most craziest and impressing sounds out of it ever heared
no joke, i totally agree with disco hooligans. psytrance is a lot about unique sounds and sound design as for sure it is about unique arrangement and composition. you won´t find this in samples or presets. secondly i totally agree that it takes much more time usually findin a right preset than goin for your own sound (for sure if you know how to get there =D)
anyways i learned a lot from them and actually i´m that lazy on synthesizing my own drumlibrary that i´m still stuck in thomas penton for hatz..... shame on ME!!! =D
cheers

Which VSTi (not sample-based i mean, true synth) can give, for example, pads of similar "analog" quality as Atmosphere?
The main reason why i use that sample-based stuff is that i can't get such variety of fat sounds from regular VSTi synths...

The best quality pads are only from 1 vst !
And it starts with O !

Being a physics student I am always interested in the mathematical/scientific aspect of sound design, occasionally getting out pencil and paper to sketch waves or calculate some freq distribution.
But I also have always played by ear (I have done many years of conservatory exams and read sheet music but I just love letting it flow forth). What I mean is, since I play by ear I can always hear exactly what I want in my head and it is just a matter of manifesting it. That is why I usually don't like presets, they just aren't quite the sound in me head.
I like to think of a sound and be able to turn all the knobs into place before playing a thing, because if I play a different sound I lose the one in my head!
Lately I have been using presets more as I just focus on melodies. But this is also because I have just gotten very familiar with some synths which I know have a preset that is very close to what I want.
As for creativity, I agree that good presets can be inspiring. Sometimes I get into a rut where I end up always making the same sound and can't avoid it. Then because of that all my songs are the same. A random preset can give a nice frame shift for the song you hear in your head. |
