What do you think, dear musicians, about using synth presets while making your tracks?
I found that I use them a lot. Of course I make some changes, but I found that I am much more focused on mixing and music itself (arrangement, melodies, harmonies, rhytms, grooves, gold rays etc...), than tweaking the hell out of a VSTi synths.
I can say more: I use a lot synths like Atmosphere, UltraFocus, Trilogy that are preset-based. More: for all drums and percussions I use samples (well, sometimes I make kickdrum by myself, but not often).
The things I tweak a lot are volume and pan faders, EQ and Compressor settings, Piano roll etc. In fact, the only synth I love to tweak some sounds out of is my hardware Waldorf microQ, but I don't use it in every track.
Okat, so what I want to say with this topic: using presets will NOT make your music sound like everyone else. Your music will sound like everyone's else if you want it to sound like everyone else's

Musicians are used to think about music, sound designers about the patches. In electronic music often the musician cover both roles but i think it's up to you at the end; not to mention that a lot of people make their own "original" patches from scratch copying some other's sounds...

good question. its not so pleasant listening to music and recognising presets and sampes that you heard several times before, beeing used without changing any parameter at all. to me , what is good with presets is that they can be inspiring in a way. e.g when i listen to a preset i like i try to figure out and learn the sequence of the waveform type, lfos, effects etc. so, i can 'remake' it on my own and fit it exactly as i want in a mix, or make it through some other synth.. |

i totaly agree with your last sentance, although i prefer to use vst's that i can change the sound during the track and not sample based vs'ts like nexus or omnisphere.
i think that with experience you learn how to use almost any sound to your benefit. |

Nothing like finding a good preset. Nothing like making your own great patch from scratch. There's no rule that you can't make a track from all presets that aren't tweaked at all, but it just depends on how you prefer to make music. Presets are a finite commodity so I think it's good practice to make your own sounds incase you run into a situation where you can't find a preset that fits your track.
Lately I've actually been finding it easier to make my tracks flow together when I make my sounds from init.

Which VSTi (not sample-based i mean, true synth) can give, for example, pads of similar "analog" quality as Atmosphere?
The main reason why i use that sample-based stuff is that i can't get such variety of fat sounds from regular VSTi synths...

I rather prefer unique music than unique sound.
Even a classical sine wave patch can produce (just with composition or even more after eq, fxs and automation) really different results...

I used to make everything from a plain saw patch I made. It was alright, but it took ages to do anything.
Now I find a preset that does a similar job in terms of the frequencies I want filled, program the melody or rhythm I want to hear, then I start tweaking that.
I think this is the best way to work, but you have to use a fairly plain initial preset so that it doesn't colour your ideas to much.
I advise everyone to make their own basic presets as a mould to be shaped. i.e have a basic psy bass/pad/lead without too much additional harmonic content or movement, then access the relevant tool for the job, compose, then manipulate.
It's a nice way to go about it. |

What I often like to do, is to add some fx as inserts to a track and then scroll your presets again. You won't even recognize them anymore. Thats when I often run into sounds I really like.

I started off using presets when I first started making music, but I don't use them now days at all. The reason being that I go straight to the init patches and start programming things to get to a sound I like and find usable in my music. time is really tight these days and I can't waste time going through banks of presets + I take a lot of time programming my kicks.

Yea I totally do the same thing, Find some interesting things that way.
Presets are good to give you a general idea of the capabilities of the instrument. But most of them are mathematically divergent to the bpm your working with and need to be tweeked anyways. |
