" A prolific studio producer, Galen Butler, who grew up playing guitar in rock bands in his native Philly, is currently the resident chill room DJ at the long-running Groove Garden. At this North Bay Area club his DJ sets have gained a reputation as deep, positive and uplifting ambient journeys. His work at countless underground gatherings and full moon parties is legendary and he has appeared as a DJ at major festivals such as Earthdance, the Fusion Festival and Burning Man. A DJ set typically blends original Skakatura material with a carefully combed mix of tracks from around the world and across various genres. Galactivation’s 70 minute musical tapestry is comprised of 12 tracks, many of whose foundations were originally formed in these club settings. "I get a groove going, start out with drum loops and recorded percussion loops, then start adding synth layers", he says. "One of the coolest things is that it’s a whole new world at your fingertips each time. This album contains the choicest cuts from the last two years of studio work. There’s no filler here. I’ve played every one of these tracks regularly in my DJ sets.""
1. Galactivation - this first track comes on with seriously fazed sounds, chimes, groovy bass sounds and a bit of attitude in my opinion! its here to groove, to show you what is up. some new agey sounds give warmth as the beat snaps. a beautiful female chants in a foreign language to lend an air of distant travels.
2. Solar Cell - a heavy bass drive and a groovy beat with some organic percussions blended with bubbly arpeggios and slick delay elements! this track inspires some groovy booty syndrome. The song develops into a serious groove with all elements picking up intensity and many layers working together.
3. Geko - another solid track full of detail, and similar instrumentation.
4. Parachute - a laid back groove that might inspire languid freestyling. a flute wanders its way thru the space. a melody is tickled out on some xylophonish bells. the dub bassline is warmed by several layers of warm drones, washes, and well placed effects and tuned percussions. a cinematic sounding melody comes in to lend an air of playfulness.
5. Midheaven - a blissed out flute with some reverb and spaced vocals give deep space for reflection, nice percussions add to the combo as the dub bassline begins to chug its way in. overall a warm and pensive sound.
6. Lucid Dreaming - a trippy warbly synth leads this track which is slightly more upbeat. a guitar also makes an appearance, lending hints of summer to this tripped out atmosphere. very warm and inviting, reminds me of lounging on the beach. there is much depth to be explored here.
7. Copal - a funky stutter with a few things happening at once, cool FX and a round organ? sound leads the way. another beautiful female sings into the delay, her voice opens my heart. a slidey synth makes spirals in the air, the percussions are like a brisk walk in the park, a heavier rhythm comes on, the FX get stronger. this track has a great structure, with the different elements all given thier chance to lead. pristine.
8. Lavatube - a gurgly lavalamp makes liquid sounds as the intro. funk runs thru the center of this track, which has a rolling bassline, crispy percussion and nice vocal FX delayed over the top. the breakdown spaces out, giving room to breathe before coming back in with more of the intelligent funk.
9. Earsocket - shimmering warmth opens and a chunky beat metronomes its way in, builds with some handdrums and a deep bass sound which morphs into a dubbish groove as some looped chant enters. Then it all washes away leaving us with a gooey synth sound drizzled over the dub foundation.
10. Telemetry - a melancholy organish sound leads us into an emotive space, driven by a breakbeat which inspires deep breathing.
this cd has been playing constantly here at my house for a couple days and i find it hard to write on each track individually now that ive experienced the cd as a whole over and over....favorites 6, 8, 1, 2. |

Ooh I want. Now.
  Within this timeless gathering,
a shining light does dance,
lost from conscious memory,
but visible in trance!

so, two of the others are also released on another label i cant remember....
and two of them are new.
i guess the older releases is hard to get and they wanted to give a proper chance for more people to hear this cool music.

Ah yes, Shakatura!!!
Superb chill-out...
Indeed true, some of this tracks were already released by Ceiba Records. But if you don't own that album already, don't hesitate and go get this. One of the few chill out cds that never leaves my case. |

Blue Spectral,
Actually, Shakatura is on CyberOctave, home of Medicine Drum among others.
And yes... it's a really nice record from a really nice guy! |
