A while ago i bought a second-hand Clavia Nord Micro Modular and i'm amazed by what it can do and how it sounds. It must be one of the best kept secrets in synth-land, because it sounds WAY better than any vsti plugin i have ever heard at about the same price. This is probably because it looks like a Sinclair ZX Spectrum microcomputer from the 80's or because it's a bit of a hassle to set up.

Anyways, i just wanted to express my happiness with my new piece of gear and to encourage people to take a look at this thing, because it's a really useful addition to any psy-studio.

You need one MIDI i/o-port for it to communicate with the editor software, and ANOTHER i/o-port to send/receive MIDI data. At least, if you don't want to switch cables all the time, which you probably don't.

The software is relatively stable, although i have experienced a few MIDI-communication errors (which were easily solved by reconnecting to the synth from within the editor). You have to run the editor in win98 compatibility modus to be able to run it under XP (!!).

After you've built a few simple synths from the manual you'll get the hang of it pretty fast. And then it's real fun to play around with. I was able to use it as a stomp-box for my guitar

Working on it... First goals: nice kick-stomper, simple sawbass with distortion, murderer fm-lead, tuned percussion stuff.

I saw that there are gazillions op modular presets on the web, but so far i haven't encountered a dedicated set of psy-oriented sounds.

i know there was a goabass patch in the library at one point. there really isnt much as far as psy specific.
once you get the hang of it though its pretty easy to make your own patches.

actually what you should do is just download some of the lead patches from the archive and learn to modify them. alot will need filters routed in, then once you have a basic sound just start going nuts patching wires all over the place. alot of times you create a mess, alot of times you create some really wild sounds.

It's pretty easy to get it to work, but you have to run it in win98 compatibility modus (right click the editor icon, etc.). The preset sharing sounds like a good idea. I hope to post some soon.

yea $500 is way to expensive.
i have noticed though the prices have been going up on the micro. i wouldnt pay more than $350 for one, you can probly score the full NM1 rack for $450 if your patient and the key version for $600.

check out old hux flux tracks too, NM1 is all over those if you want to get a feel for some of the sounds that can be made psy wise.

Not true! All you have to do is turn your Processor Scheduling to 'Programs' in System Properties->Advanced->Performance->Advanced before trying to connect the editor to the synth. Make sure to set it back to 'Background Services' afterwards

NM1 absolutely rocks. I love mine to bits. Anyone interested in discussions about it should check here:

There is also a HUGE library of patches for it there. And I mean HUGE.
