Several questions (MIDI connections + monitors in a appartment)

I'm going to change my gear soon, and I have a few questions :

- I bought a Presonus Firepod and a Behringer BCF2000, and I also have a Moog LP, an Axiom 49 and a Virus TI, I'd like to connect everything in MIDI so I can everything at once.

Until then I was using my Virus as a soundcard and its MIDI OUT was connected to the MIDI IN of the LP, and its MIDI IN was connected to the MIDI OUT of the Axiom 49.

Now from what I understood, I'm going to have to use the MIDI THRU, but how exactly will I do that (in harware & software terms (I'm on Live 7)) ?

(As I haven't received the Firepod and the BCF2000, I haven't been able to experiment connections)

- Secondly, I'm also about to buy a pair of new monitors. I was considering the Adam A7, but then I realised that if I can't find a room made for music (don't know the exact translation, you get my meaning) to rent, I'll soon have to relocate my home studio in an appartment which could be very badly unsonorized (damn, another bad translation :/ )

That's the reason why I've also been considering buying the Adam A5, which are supposed to be good, and much more adapted for appartment work.

Do you have any recommendations on this ? Plus, if I can find a better place for my music later, would adding an Adam Sub8 be a good way to make up for the lack of bass of the A5 ? I know that subs are hard to use well, but then I would be in a room made for music (ie I could configure the layout the way I want to), plus I intend to do some basic acoustic treatment (for about 1'000 euros max), will it then be usable and useful ?

Thanks for your answers

There are some exceptions, but generally midi thru is only useful for controlling synths from your DAW. I would suggest plugging in as much as possible with USB, then using your Firepod's midi out to one synth, that synth's midi thru to another's midi in, etc. You would only be able to use one synth at a time if they're all in one midi chain.

It's not really a question of apartment vs. house when it comes to choosing monitors as much as room size. I assume you mean that you'll have less space to work with and you won't be able to have full range speakers without annoying the neighbors.

I would go with the A7's and use their room eq if necessary..it wouldn't be ideal but I think it would be worth it in the long run.

I've used 7" woofers in an apartment before with a low freq extension down to 30hz and it was never really a problem. I just worked on the final mix when I knew the people downstairs weren't home and kept it relatively quiet when I was just writing or listening to music.           You believe in the users?
Yeah, sure. If I don't have a user, then who wrote me?

Then USB is good at handling MIDI ? Tweakheadz says so, I've heard people say it's bad, though. The good thing is that all my hardware can go USB, would be much less trouble then !

I happy to read that A7 could be okay in a appartment, but from what I understood, big speakers doesn't sound as good as small ones when you work with a low volume, is that true (if so, then why does, for example, Adam made a smaller version of the A7 with its A5? Only to offer something cheaper ?) ?

Thanks for your help

Even if you're using a midi interface, you're just converting the midi signal to HID (basically the same as just using a USB connection). So, assuming your controller has decent drivers, it will be fine. MIDI barely uses any bandwidth compared to an audio interface or almost any other peripheral, and I think you could theoretically use something like 200 midi channels in or out through a USB 2 connection, so you have more than enough bandwidth for 3 or 4.

What you said about working at low levels is true, but seems to be true with any speaker (headphones included). This is why some people like to add equal-loudness curve filters to hifi speakers so that the bass is intense enough and the high end is more present without having to turn up the volume too much. I think some of it is also psychoacoustic..you hear certain frequencies much louder when listening at low levels, specifically treble frequencies that let you localize sound.

I assume Adam made the A5's just to follow suit with all the other brands..everyone seems to have a budget 5" monitor. It uses the same line of drivers but inherently has less bass than the A7. I'm sure they're great to listen to more organic music on for the price, but I wouldn't be comfortable mixing psy on them.           You believe in the users?
