Hi all,
I'm trying to set my home studio and i really need your advice.
In past i played with trackers, then with Reason (unfortunately haven't tried much of all those VSTs). The thing i don't like about Reason is its sound. The thing i like about it is its interface, really easy to work with for me, as far as i'm much more musician not sound engineer hehe
Well, now having worked with hardware synths i would say i'm in love with their sound and how it is made on them. So i'm going to use hardware now.
My problem is to understand
1) how my hardware synths should be syncronized to use with software sequencer (multi-input [midi+audio] soundcard or a mixer+hardware effects unit?) considering that circumstance that i plan to organise all my equipment like in Reason (or maybe it's not the optimum way? tell me).
2) Besides it i need the opportunity to twist the effects for my hardware in realtime, and this is the main problem!
To put the effects each on the audiotrack in sequencer? But as far as i know, soundcard should support virtual asio-channels in this case (to put an effect on the virtual channel to hear the changes in real time, as far as you can't just put an effect on the physical channel, in won't work... or am i mistaken?)
2.1) Is it a good alternative to use just a simple chip mixer and a budget effects unit? In this case, are there any multi-audio input effect processors (cause i can't afford myself several of these each for the hardware synth)?
sorry for the complex question and the long post,

well first you need hardware, so until you have it i suggest continue producing with Reason!
1) you can use Cubase, or many other sequencers, to control your hardware. Cubase can also control Reason too!
2) you will need a mixer and/or firewire soundcard to input many hardware at once.
2.1) dunno, but you can combine mixer with effects across all channels. this is quite expensive! i dont have the money to buy this so i cant comment
further, you CAN use reason and your hardware at the same time! I do this with Nord Lead, Cubase, and Reason.
good luck and good night |

sundrop, thanks for the feedback, unfortunately it still doesn't make things clear to me.
I have hardware already,
of course i know about how to control it with Cubase etc and about rewiring and all this combining too.
Yes, the hardware effect to each channel that's quite expensive, and i have mentioned i can't afford it to myself.
I'll try to simplify my question a bit.
You say you use NL. I'm going to use it too, with Nova and Korg MS2000, and maybe with Roland mc-505.
How do you make it to hear its (synth's) sound coming thru the input of your soundcard THRU the effect (software effects "waves" or whatever) applied to the input in REAL TIME?
I don't speak about 'rendering' effects to your recorded audio-track, i'm interested in hearing them while playing my synth, connected to my soundcard (you know what i mean, that's how you twist your synths in Reason and hear changes before you record a pattern). Is it possible at all?.. |

Hi
This is extremely easy. Plug your Nord Lead/Korg whatever into the inputs of your soundcard. Activate the inputs and outputs of your soundcard in Cubase. Open up an audio track. Push the MONITOR button... And there you go. Put your vst effects on the audio track, and you will hear them in real time. You need a good souncard with good ASIO drivers or else your vst`s wont work properly. And invest your money in monitors. hardware effects of the reverb/delay/chorus type are (in my humble opinion) obsolete.
Hope it helped! |

its like barius told,
and also you need a midi track to "MIDI OUT" in wich you write the notes you want the synth to play
also you may need to slightly adjust the "delay" of the midi track so that the synth plays synchronized

yeah thanx guys, now i'm sure it's no problem to synchronize my synths, but is it all the same if talking about guitar and microphone recording i wonder? not sure...
TRapp, no, mixer means getting several effect units... not possible |
