Would spreading my monitors apart a bit from the standard equilateral triangle setup, help increase my sense of stereo spread?
Should the monitors be exactly the same distance apart from my ears as they are from each other, or can the monitors be farther apart from each other than they are from your head?
I'm trying to make sure I have my monitors spaced properly, my biggest issue mixing seems to be my sense of stereo spread vs centered sounds. |

move them until you find what you are after , personaly i don t use my nearfield in a perpendicular triangle these day ...
for nearfield the closer you are the less the room affect their sound ,so it might be a good idea to stay around 1 meter or a bit more/less from the speakers, in sweet spots.. and spread them more if it improve panorama, stereo...
this depend a lot of the room and the monitors used and personal taste.. so what ever sound good to you.. you can try monitor on the side too if tweeter is at ear height , i use mine like this since 2 years i like it.. |

Funny that you mention this. I have read everywhere that one should set up monitors in an equilateral manner, however during the winter vacation I moved my entire studio to my parents house and due to the physical contraints of the room and desk I could only set them up in a way that was spread out further than equilateral.
And the funny thing is, I did get a much better feel for the stereospread this way and you can hear it in the tracks i made there. When I moved things back to my normal studio where everything is set-up just perfect, I didnt get nearly as good of a sense for the stereofield.
Now, I know that in a production studio the aim is not to get it to sound as good as possible, but as realistic as possible. So maybe I was just cheating myself, but I think my tracks i made there sounded better on neutral headphones than the ones i made in my studio.

cross referencing with headphones can be good for listening for that. as the stereo image is totally exaggerated on headphones, you'll notice the details much more easily. |
