This is something thats been happening with live sets I've heard in the last year.
Artists integrating the "fun" aspect into their music... a little humour, twists and turns that are so unexpected that they leave you laughing in disbelief, and a presence behind the decks thats not trying only to be cool/energetic but also warm, smiling and having a good time tickling the crowd.
2 Live set highlights for me would be :
Kiriyama (Winter 2006)... freakishly twisted sounds with a little bit of the rasta vibe thrown in and some really whacky breakdowns and an unexpected oldschool hiphop sample that leaves you laughing and going 'where the fuckkk did that come from' ... fun set that is a carefree journey of the mind.
Primordial Ooze (Summer 2006)... Really whacky opener which turns into slithering deep bassy sounds that tickle your gut. Sounds that change so fast that you're left flabbergasted. Music for twisted elves who like to dart around the room.
Sensient & The Fractal Cowboys/Quasar seem like they'd evoke the same senses...waiting to hear them play live.
Would really love to see more of this vibe and sound behind the console... any recommendations? |

Yidam we know what this is all about. I think if you modified the topic to tracks instead of sets it makes more sense. Well as you know i laugh for most of the bombs hehe |

Too many "name your track" threads so I figured this could keep it to people who've experienced the music at an event. Thats what I'm looking for too... artists to hear play in the future.
Got all the sound ammunition I need |

ooh.. konflux did this fantastic mix of a jellyheadz track with some "boom, boom, boom.. i want you in my room..." track - i was stomping and twisting , then a little confused, laughing hysterically and more stompin' fun. f*cking delicious. it wasn't a spliced sample, the tracks were intergrated or overlapped (yes, i am not a dj or producer ) anyways, it made everybody feel delightfully ridiculous and the likes. i think he may be playing at AUM this year so definitely have a listen.
nice topic, yidam *hugs*

I love those serious tracks that play and make us dig, but then in the middle give funny as hell sample form a children lullaby or something silly like that

This wasn't in 2006 it was several years ago when Grapes of Wrath and Metalloids played at Mercy Hot Springs (near SF). At some point in their set (which of those artists I don't know but it was one of them) after a couple tracks they played the original 'Are you going to San Francisco' song. Sounded so good and genuine and fun. and the longer they let it play the more heartfelt it was.
So fucking cool I'll never forget that.

simon posford does some silly things not just with the sounds but with his faces and gestures......I alwayz get a kick out of that.....
Sensient with his off the wall sounds that he has in his live sets.........Ive heard him insert a jazz sample in his set that was pretty quirky......

Penta played one of those sets with his Homer Simpson samples and many others in that album. Was quite fun to hear em. Even a lot of tracks by Zik have those funny samples which snap you back to reality when you're a little lost in the music.

Boozebaba Zik's live streaming set a couple of months ago had some pretty quirky sounds thrown in. Love it when Bob Marley is sampled after the breakdown. Takes me to reggae beaches and oversized spliffs.
rich you lucky freak! Grapes of Wrath & Metalloids!!! Yowza! Wish they were still making that sound.
Fungus Funk was similarly twisted back in the day. |
