Set progression in trance mixing

I used to mix UK Hard Trance but for the last couple of years have been mixing psy and prog. One thing I have always struggled to understand is the lack of set progression in psychedelic music mixing.

Learning my mixing on vinyl with UK Hard Trance taught me well I believe as one musical style has such a range of sounds and basslines.

I would always start out slowly (139 bpm) with meoldic sounds and then as a two hour set would build, so would the speed and the hardness of the music.

I enjoy continuing this mixing style with psychedelic music, starting with the likes of Antix, Freq and other Iboga artists and then ending after two hours with a couple of full on monsters, all the while, building up the speed and lifting the psy-ness of the set. I never hear this done at parties....this is my idea of set progression, a musical journey if you will...

what are your thoughts people??

hi man,

your idea is cool but also depends what time you are playing if its night or morning or day...I have been to FMF 2004 and the dj's although they have abig name did not even give us this kind of trip they just played on and on the same commercial style night, day , morning ??? When i came back to Malta i was really releived from the dj sets we play here my friends are great man they start off the night with like Minimal sort Vibrasphere & Freq or Sonic cube that style i mean and then into the night with more hard music till it's really hard just before sunrise and full power melodic at sunrise till late morning we are still jumping!

It's undescribable few people but great music!

Yeah man - progression throughout a party is very important, but for example I mixed in an Iboga records song "Peter Pan Syndrome" by Jaia - fantistic song, as the first song of my set and just bumped up the speed so it played at 142 at 3:00 in the morning - got a massive reponse from what is essentially a progressive trance track.....seems like not enough imagination is used sometimes.....or perhaps not enough looking at the crowd....

You are so right man and its because the dj's nowadays play more for themselves than for the crowd! There has to be a balance you have to give them what they want but in your style and with good music!

I absolutely agree with you!

Quote ganjagil "You are so right man and its because the dj's nowadays play more for themselves than for the crowd!"

I play 100% for myself and I progress a lot thru sets. Its a matter of how good the DJ is, and nothing else. However, maybe we understand different things by <playing for themselves> - Actually, I have the complete opposite opinion to you, so this should be good hehehe

I use different kinds of progression, depending on what time Ill be listening to the music. Usually, I mix stuff for my own private events, record them and then listen to them while tripping.
Which is great, since I can control 10+ hours of flow and progression + experience it ALL from the listeners perspective.

I agree with Esbee, that DJs at parties usually do NOT progress that much.
Maybe it is because they are affraid to change the style, because the ones dancing the most maybe wont like it. At least, it has to be a factor... Making use of artistical freedom takes courage. It would be on my mind for sure.

Esbee I share your thoughts on progression - Ive tried many experiments also, mixing music genres, progressive, full on, chillout, breakbeat, minimal and such. My vision is to try and create a cohesive set, with as many music styles as possible.
That would, of course, not work at a party - which is why I enjoy mixing@home for myself and friends.
In the future, flow and progression is EVERYTHING, since mixing will become easier and easier.

It almost seems, some DJs try to find tracks that sound as similar as possible. In some way trying to keep it all within the same style. The style they are expected to be spinning.
I do the same, in some ways, but still, in a way that the last tracks are different from the first ones. Sometimes its STYLE1->STYLE2->STYLE1 also... I might go back
I made a set "there and back again", which is mainstream full on, which turns dark and twisted, and then goes back to be softer and melodic full on(however, I chose more melancolic melodies for the end).

Progression is all about making things flow right, from track to track, while still being able to change the mood, attitude and energy of the set... If a bunch of really skilled DJs get to spin together at a party, they should be able to take over from each other and together create a REAL voyage into trance.

I absolutely think you are saying right and i was wrong because if the Dj plays the right music for himself and its good the crowd will totally be with him, coming to think about it its also what we do here in Malta and because the crowd is so small that we are all friends here the dj sets are made with the music the people like most so on and on its great...you are a good dj my friend bolenth keep up the good work!           Your sound, is your music, is your soul keep them all on the right track!
