thanks for all the advice etc.
will prob passon the sub and put the total towards something else... do more reasearch on monitors!!
I currently have the Presonus USB sound car and love it, so might sell it and get the firebox with my macbook pro!
Mmmm synths are hard to find second hand here in Australia, and buying overseas means power outlet issues... so will probably have to buy something new... although I can get a Nord Lead 2 quite cheapso might look into that... never had a nord...

wellmy good mate is going over seas for a year and abit so I bought his akai 49 key midi off him for $300AU
Think I might consider now the Virus TI desktop version... and I think for Xmas can convince the missus to chip in for some Adam A7's...
I also decided to go for a PC laptop than a Mac... cheaper and get more in it...
thanks for all the tips!

You have it all going for you mate, midi keyboard, a nice desktop synth and don't forget a soundcard. If your laptop has firewire there are plenty of good options in the "mother of soundcards" thread.
The reasons you should buy a mac is because it's a lot more reliable than a PC when it comes to stableness and performance, on the downside it's expensive and limited software wise (unless you are planning to run Logic in which you need a Intel Mac). We have a pc in the studio and 2 mac's for lives. It's a good solution.
I wish you luck!

Thanks for the positive feedback
I think value wise I'm going to get a Mac desktop to start out, as gigs are waaaay off hehe...
Two quick questions:
I'm extremely unhappy with my Technics 1200 headphones even for dj'ing, what headphones would be suitable for the studio?
(I'd like to have these as well as monitors)
Cheers

For what its worth, my original copy of Logic 8 has crashed more times on my MacPro than the cracked version of Logic 5.5 I was using on my old custom made PC.

Really? i know shitloads of people who had loads of hardware issues with a MAC, just beacuse you buy a brand doesn´t mean its top notch quality. I´ve never had a single issue with stability-problems since the win XP, and we can count in 3 laptops 1 from acer, HP and Asus. 4 desktop computers with the first one i had running a Pentium 3 733 Mhz.
I have a feeling this is gonna turn into a pc vs mac-thread soon, lets avoid it shall we?

well I like both, they both have good n' bad.
I'm getting a macbook pro mainly because my wife has a mac desktop and macbook pro, so it will make it easier to intergrate all of our units and where I am a nice macbook pro is about the same as a mid-range branded pc laptop.
No vs in here please... all the tips have been grat so far thanks

If your wife already has a macbook pro then go for a macbook pro, you would already have most of the software and unix interface is stable even if your not very tech savvy unlike xp where the user with good knowledge can keep it running stable with minimal installations and optimized version of the os.
But spend most of your budget on quality monitors cos practically producing, mixing or listening that is going to be the component that is going to affect most.

Cool but audition as many brands of monitors before you buy ... def give a listen to dynaudio/adam/focal/event ... since sound is very subjective ... all the best

you cannot do anything wrong with Adam A7 or above..
For really good headphones i can advice you the Ultrasone ones..little more expensive as Beyerdynamic or Akg but actualy way better in details and clearness ..they are worth the few extra bugs..
cheers
