Ok so I had bought lots of gear over the last 10 years and have now cleared it all out.

I am purchasing a Macbook Pro this weekend with Ableton Live! which i had used on my old PC lappy and liked.

I'm also purchasing:

KRK RP6 G2 monitors with the KRK RP10s Subwoofer.

Akai MPK49 midi controller, tho will get the 61 version if i can.

What i need to know are what are the essential soft synths for:

Dark Psy

Progressive (eletro style)

and Chillout like Ultimae style.

and is it worth investing in a Virus TI or should i wait for the new Waldorf Strmoberg if it ever come out?

Cheers

Mike

No one can tell you how you will write psy. That's your journey.

I see no mention of room treatment. Will you be mixing your self?

I had a supernova. I still have a KS rack which you may like if you liked the supernova. I have played with a Virus B. I think you will like the new Virus if you like the nova stuff.

Its funny if I had your money I would buy myself a 303.

as has usually been suggested:
you can make all styles of music with every synth. Just start with one or two and get to know those. TI is definitely recommended if you have the money (or the missus). For ultimae stuff i would get a very good reverb and learn how to use it.
And get the best monitors you can afford.

+1

get better monitors. you can skimp on everything else (at first), but get the best monitors you can afford from the beginning.

for the other stuff, as long as you don't overwhelm yourself from the get-go, you should be ok, regardless of what you get.

i would definitely pay close attention to the used gear market. with the economy being what it is, people are desperate for cash and there's tons of quality stuff being sold for peanuts (at least in the US). i don't think there's a lot of risk buying used, as far as stuff breaking down, and you can just get more bang for your buck.

i also would advise you to re-think buying the MPK. i mean, it's a really great controller and i used to own one. but i don't think the price tag is justified for what it actually is. MPK61 would run you around $500. i picked up a used Virus KC for $700. the keys are much nicer. it has 4 times as many knobs and they are all labeled already and laid out in a way that corresponds to a lot of Vsti's. so that's already nicer as just a midi contorller. and of course there's the whole synth part too, which you might be interested in, making psy and all. or you can pick up a used Nord Lead 1 or Roland JP-8000 for cheaper than MPK61. that's crazy. so that's something to consider. and if you are thinking of picking up a TI, then having an MPK is redundant. if you are interested in drum-pads, you can just pick up a used finger trigger for 70-80, if you are a light tapper. and if you think you are going to beat the shit out of them, then you can pick up a used a MPD for 100-120. it's always better to have stuff modular anyway, then in a all-in-one-package. you can put it on your lap and tap away. try putting an MPK61 on your lap.

as far as plug-ins, you can just explore what Ableton provides to you out of the box. or if you are set on buying something, start with either one of the following: zebra, sylenth, rapture, or one of rob papen's synth albino/predator/blue and take it from there. or you can pick up NI Komplete 5/6 for cheap, which is a great deal. just be sure to study one thing at a time, since it's easy to get overwhelmed by what you are getting.

and if you pick up a TI, but still want to have Waldorf's flavor, you can pick up Largo. in fact, that's probably your answer for a Vsti right there, since you already know you enjoyed your waldorf synths before.

Zebra2, Surge, Albino3 are what I primarily use for softsynths

I make all types of music (dark, chill, fullon, psyprog, dnb, other experimental stuff) and these synths work well for all of them, it's just knowing how to use them and finding things you like.

I also have a MPK49 (which I bought from septa ). It's nice, but there's probably something out there more worth spending money on. I just like having an actual keyboard so it works well for me even though I don't use it to it's full capabilities.          http://soundcloud.com/ascensionsound

The only serious studio suggestion I can give is, spend as much money as you can for acoustic treatment and the best monitors you can afford. There are no "special" synths for different kinds of dance music, if you are a serious synth programmer. Your ability to listen well (i.e. in a proper room with proper monitors) is what will make THE difference, not the Virus TI.

You might want ot get some biger monitors and not the sub, its not really easy to place and from a learning point of view could realy mess you up.
They have to be placed perfectly or you get a crazy phase that if you dident know where it was come'in from could mess you up.
Forget the Virus for now and get room treatment even if its just cheep studio foam it will help.
Ableton has lots of great plugins already, learn all those and the daw its self and then when you know what you need to add do it then rather than adding tons of plugins that just take space and youll just delete later.

Oh ya, sound card!
Youll realy want to do some research on this to see what you'll need for what you do.
I have the Presonus Fire box and love it but everyone has there own oppinions.           \\\"Invoking the inner dancing buddha with future frequencies from beyond\\\" ~GyPsy
