thanks,
that's not really my problem,
my main problem is where to place mics, and what compression to use

About miking:

Miking is a really delicate issue, in this field there is much more to experience in miking then certain system or something that u learn... You should open the wooden lid on the top of your piano ( like u see on the TV when they play the open Grand ), and then u have few options:

1. to put the mic very close to the strings inside the body of the piano, then u will get quite accurate sound, lookig more as small room, also easy to get it distorted ( so beware ).

2. put the mike some 20 - 50 cm from the open top, and if u have 2 mics, put one on each side ( that u can do in no.1 as well ) - that is my favorite ( not a big specialist in pianos actually )

3. to create a large hall feeling or kinda chamber, you should use your listening skills and find the corner in the room that gets most of the feedback overtones / leftovers ( but I guess that just the closest corner to the piano will do - and place the mic high but not completely in the corner ( say at least some 20 cm into the room ) ---> this may surely proove itself as a total rubbish cuz it is something I never tried to do only makes sence to me

EQing:

I don't advise to EQ the piano too much - it has a very fat and special sound as it is.. Definitely not to high cut it - this way u will loose all the feel and the trembling in the air.. Check tho that the low mid isn't over emphasised ( Piano's tend to get this way )

Piano is a hard one... you need a good mic, piano, room and gear for a great result, and its a combination of trying out different methods till you get what you want. Also varying polar patterns on the mics can make a world of difference. Its a lot of fun!

Check these articles on the science of piano recording:

http://www.sospubs.co.uk/sos/may99/articles/recpiano.htm

(includes the line: For the ultimate in isolation, do as TORI AMOS does in her concert tours. Use a piano equipped with MIDI to drive a decent sound module -- the result is total isolation, which is perfectly suitable for live sound when the full band is playing. For the quieter numbers, revert to the mics over the piano.)

AND

http://www.sospubs.co.uk/sos/1994_articles/oct94/pianomiking.html

And compression I'd use as little as possible in recording, add it at the mixing stage later.

I hope that helps!

of course the best piano to record is a wing piano ...           Crackling universes dive into their own neverending crackle...

just one comment for yuli's words- all you said is the correct way to record a piano, but not with a condencer!!! but with a regular mic. also there is a big difference in wich option oko should choose by the range of the mic ( omni, radical etc..)
that's it. boom.
