Report from trying both techniques out.
Went down to the mastering guy's studio yesterday, with 6 stems (kick, bass, FX, drums, top end, synths) and with a stereo file of my final mix, so we did two versions, one stem master and one conventional stereo file master. The stereo file sounded better.
Not that it means anything other than, get the mix to sound exactly the way you want it to, cause allowing for so much control over the mix with stems, might end up the guy mixing these elements in a way that is not as good as your original mix.
We managed to get the same acoustic levels as well, so I don't see how stem mastering is supposed to sound clearer for louder levels.
One good thing I got from this session, is that I have to get the Focusrite Liquid mix!

maybe you mix better then this guy , and maybe someone else will be even better then you. thats the point i think.
for example , my next project will be mixed throu analogue summin mixer , something i cant do at home , with ssl and neve channels etc i reken it will be better , and also i trust the dude that he know perfectly what he does.
its not mastering anymore its mixing.
stem mastering usualy referd to multiband simulation.

Yep. At the end of the day it is better if I just try my best to get things sorted on my own and better my mixing abilities as I go along. Not saying again that people that leave the mixing job for someone else, would not try and get things as good as possible, but I'd rather mix things and move on to the next tune istead of running around spending more time on every tune I make.

Separation mastering has its uses. For example, if you build an ableton live set in the style of Tom Cosm's video using mastered stems versus unmastered stems, [in theory] the mastered stems will sound cleaner.

You mean getting the processed stems from the mastering house for the live set? You do have a point, but that would mean that the mastering engineer would do a proper job on them, where that was not the case with my own experience. Not saying that becase one guy did not get it spot on others, wouldn't, but things start getting way too complicated and time consuming...for me at least.
I believe my skills are OK to set my own rough mastering chain for the live gigs. Getting my first labum properly mastered by Colin, helped me understand a lot of things of how things should sound, as well.
