Sennheisers are definitely worth it. I prefer them over the usual Sony/Pioneer/Technics/Stanton headphones a lot of other people use.
Definitely worth every penny in my opinion.

Any comparisons with the HD650/600?

Havent tried those, but in comparison to HD595, PXC450, beyerdyn. dt770/990, the HD800 are in a totally different class (both sonically and pricewise; the HD800 are about 1000-1200,- euros ). They are extremely detailed in the high-frequencies (5k-12k), I can sort out problems that I have difficoulty hearing on my Focal Twins. That is more than I can say for any other cans Ive ever tried...
The stereoimaging is way more like listening to speakers than normal headphones... These cans are actually worth the price if you allready have a set of good monitors...

Well I haven't heard them yet but I assume the pricing works the way it does in all high end audio/production gear - noticeably and substantially (to the right ears) but not extremely better than the HD650's, but that slight improvement is worth a thousand dollars extra to a lot of people.

Wow..hadn't looked at the response until I posted the link. Still haven't heard the HD800's, but the HD650's look so much better...flatter high end without the 8khz spike, lower harmonic distortion and better isolation.

Nice one Kane, thanks a lot for the link! Looks like they are both not very flat huh? And you are certainly right about the 8khz spike... should make for some weird sssss...
however on the low end (what goes wrong first in any headphone these seem to be slightly better, will hve to try them out and a-b them when I get a chance...

The HD650 is the "flattest" headphone I can think of, except for the little 12kHz dip and some other nuances. You have to remember that a pair of headphones with an actually flat response would sound extremely unnatural and probably cause some hearing damage. The round bass boost around 150hz and the slow roll off after 2-3kHz make it sound better because it compensates for the closeness to the ear and the lack of physical punch from the low end.
You also have to remember that Headroom is only using one mock torso and head with its own character and one compensation curve that assumes a perfectly "average" torso and head size, inner and outer ear shape, hearing ability, etc.

I just ordered a pair of Sennheiser HD650's, waiting for them to arrive
I've always liked Sennheiser headphones since I got my Sennheiser HD-25's. I've tried a lot of different brands; AKG, Beyerdynamic, Sony, Pioneer, etc. Sennheiser just sounds right to me for some reason.
I'm sure I'm gonna be happy with the HD650's
I'll add to the topic more when I get mine

^you'll love them
they take a while to break in, and you take a while to get used to them...
...but after a few weeks, smoke a reefer, load up a nice acoustic guitar + singer album and just float away

What do you guys think about the AKG 701 vs HD 650? Which one is flatter & better for referencing mixes?

It gets REALLY subjective here and you won't know unless you listen to both. Not just giving you the default answer.
