i was in the same situation few months ago , i read lot of reviews , it seems the hd 600 is very good then 650 but i went for beyer dynamics 880 pro cause it s cheaper ,built in quality is very good and sound is good too ,if you can listen to them check the 990 pro also(right now i think i should have gone with them insteed cause i read many times the bass is better for electronic music but they are not as analytic ). open headphones are more detailed and more suited for monitoring .

I have a pair of HD650's, and I've owned about 10 pairs of high end cans.

These are the best headphones I've ever heard. There may be subjectively better out there, but these are just perfect for my taste. The bass is super-rich, deep, punchy.. just mind blowing.

Everything sounds absolutely incredible on them. I would compare them to owning a £multi-thousand audiophile stereo.. but for a fraction of the cost.

That's the problem though - they make things sound great, they're listening headphones. I can't mix a damn thing on them.

+ 1

i'm a proud owner of HD 280 Pro...
the sound is crystal clear...
definitely they are heavier than most of the AKG headphones but i found
Sennheiser's sound little more clearer....
imo it depends on hearing...

you should go and have a demo of both the headphones and find the best suitable to your ears yourself...
both AKG and Sennheiser are good...

have seen many people using AKG and they are very satisfied too like i'm with mine.....

goodluck            Truth will always guard our souls......

I tried both of these and a couple others a little while ago. The K701's are a little funky in their high end response, but much more spacey and open. Both are amazing, but I went with the K701's because they sounded better at low levels and for their space. If I had to pick one to only make music with I would've gone with the HD650's, but I'm listening to music with headphones on at low levels 4-6 hours a day and didn't want to have to turn them up to get the full effect. The K701's are great for writing with, but I haven't tried to mix with them.

Grado headphones are very nice in the same kind of way. They tend to boost their low and high end response so that you don't have to turn the headphones up for the bass to be intense when it needs to be. Very smooth and amazing just to listen to music with, but it makes mixing with them almost impossible.

Basically if you're looking for accuracy just to make music with, go with the HD650's. If you listen to music a lot with headphones on and want something that will sound great for that too, K701's or a nice pair or Grado's would be awesome. I would also look into Beyerdynamic and Denon (yes, Denon) before you make a decision.

Depending on your rig, you might also need a headphone amp for the K701's..didn't sound that good with my interface's headphone out.           You believe in the users?
Yeah, sure. If I don't have a user, then who wrote me?

thanks very much everyone, that's really really helpful! Kane, what you said about making music vs. listening is very interesting.

think i've pretty much decided on the HD 650s... but will try a pair on at a shop today. i've given up hope of being able to properly audition a pair, but everyone agrees that both the 701s and 650s are excellent cans... so it's just for comfort, i think.

i can't afford a decent amp yet, so i'll be running them out of my interface until i can. i'm tempted to do a DIY headphone amp as a project next year.

thanks again everyone!

^Make sure you check out the Cmoy Pocket Amp if you're considering DIY. I forget the link and don't feel like googling, but I've built a couple as temporary/portable headphone amps and got very good results. There's a huge amount of information on the site as far as choosing an op amp, how to build it on a proto board, enclosure suggestions, etc.

Good luck           You believe in the users?

the Sennheisers arrived today!

they're in a very nice box and smell lovely.

have so far resisted the temptation to put them on... although started the burn-in and could feel the bass
