The mailing of a cd, etc, thing mentioned above is considered to be the poor man's last resort in the US. Technically, in the US, and most other countries you own the copyright of a song the minute you write it, however you will have difficulty proving theft of your tracks unless you register it with whatever national copyright registration department your country has. In the US, you can get the forms at most libraries or even download them. Last I checked it was about $20 or so per work to register them, although you could also create a whole album and register that as a single work as well. Also most countries have signed one of the major international copyright treaties, so your rights will generally carry over to other countries as well, but it varies.

While I understand that a lot of people simply pirate software, there are some of us who actually do buy everything we use and I know at least one other person on this thread besides me has spend some good money on legit software. Yes a lot of people get it for "free", but not all of us do. (sorry, the "everyone steals their software" thing has been a pet peeve of mine as of late)

i totally agree with SuperGlue
the main thing in music production is promotion. to me, releases shouldn´t focus great sales - the purpose of music is spirituality and making you famous to get bookings (and through the bookings get some money).
i also believe that we all should see music making as a hobby - i´m also talking to those who want to make a living out of an underground movement. to me it wouldn´t make sense to be part of a great thing and claiming to make a living out of it. this way it cannot be avoided that people start conforming and so the music and the parties get more adapted to the masses which brings more problems and "non magic" events etc.
let´s fight for open source spirit in music, pay better the artists for their sets and, especially in a music movement that claims to be alternative and underground, the artists should all think about going to work (i´m talking about part time, not fulltime of course) to support their global underground and go on beeing independant in the music creation etc.

its a nice topic I must say...
Well yeah, it is a question we all ask to our self before we send all those demos... Personally I must have send more than 50 cds up to now to various labels in the world...
I have talked to a lot of people, mostly from the music industry, I came into contact with lots of the people from the labels I have send my music on and this is what is my opinion:
Send your music out and do not worry about anything.
1 Labels get sooooo many cds everyday, that they wouldnt bother to get 'yours' and remix it... If your track is soooo good they will license it.
2 If a dj from a label, plays your track to an event with out your knowledge, personally I see it as an advantage and it makes me happy since more people arounde the world will listen to what IM producing... Who knows, maybe there is another guy in the crowd that likes the track and asks for it!!!!
3 Labels have to kee tracks on you... You have to send, talk, and basically promote your self a lot before you even consider for a contract or something.... So promotion never harmmed anyone.
** So, send your stuff out there, and you do not have to worry about anything... Worry when you share your stuff in the net...

the idea with the registered letter works, but with time it could be pritty expensive ( at least here in swizz...), n if it should come to a negotiation...in the end u still need a lawyer = muchos monetas
however...in our relative small scene the income isn t as big anyways...so...i guess it s shoot with bazooka on ants...
btw...very interested what anakoluth sends to xxx-records...didn t know u re in that metier too...lol...
