I've built my own rack and a closet for my PC. There is not much to it really. I just used MDF. Not the nicest looking "wood" but very solid and easy to work with. I dont think you need any tutorials or articles to build your own studio furniture; just use your brain and some comon sense!

i'm definitely going to build new studio furniture when i move my studio and perhaps i will make some notes on the process.
as AvS said, this is a good tip: "just use your brain and some comon sense!"
use some wood which is thick enough, cut it how you like it to be etc. make a drawing how you want to organize your gear (monitors, screens, below maybe some rack synths and the small keyboard and controller/faderbox, below some place for racks etc)
good luck and post some pictures if you're finished $ exp(j*pi) + 1 = 0. $ |

yep you're right, they cut it at mm precision which is good if you have drawn some parts which you want to fit together.
  $ exp(j*pi) + 1 = 0. $ |

I make most my studio funinture out of 18 and 25 mm mdf. If you draw up a plan and work out the cuts you need, most timber yards will do cut it for you... about 50 pence a cut in the uk. Worth it in the long run. I'm a carpenter but i still get them to do it for me (dont have a table saw at home)Works out nice and cheap and you have custom funriture
As for the look??? a coat of paint goes a long way |

MDF is very good for making cases, racks and such, for the tabletop i would use thick multiplex however, since it can take more 'bending' pressure. Good luck and post some pictures when your done

Hi,
I build all my studio furniture my self.
Just this week I built a new table. I will take a picture and post it if you are interested. And here you can see my old studio:
http://cosmoon.kumara.ch/baeumliwege/assets/images/Panorama_2b.jpg
it's mostly made of spruce plywood (fichte sperrholz) thats only a little more expensive than mdf, a little harder to work with but it looks much better and is much more solid.
Especially for tables you will get in trouble with mdf.
The table in the corner with the integrated rack was the only part which was difficult to build. here you can see it alone and empty:

I'm selling this one for 70Euro but you would have to pick it up in switzerland ;-)
My new table is basically a 2 meter wide table with three 7HE racks integrated. before the racks there is like 50cm space for desktop equipment and above the racks there is a 2.4 meter wide platform for computer monitors and speakers. The master keyboard is in a drawer under the table an can be pulled out if needed. I didn't paint it, just sealed it and it looks really good with the plywood.
Sounds good, doesnt it? And the best thing is, that it was pretty easy to build. All you need is a jigsaw and a akkudriller with screwers and drillers. Total cost was 200Euro or so.
If you want I will take a picture.
Have fun.
