the second big problem is that our live
setup wont work as it should.

we use ableton and windows for our livesets
all seems to run great but at the last 15 min of our set the sound beginns to stuck,
u can see at ableton thet the cpu usage jumps a little.

its totally weird because the first 45 min all worked great..it happend allready at two lieacts..not so good :-I

we use a terratec phase 26 usb as soundcard
and installed bootcap to start windows instead of macosx

help would be nice, thanks

Do you have any plugins that kick in towards the end of your set? Or maybe more active tracks than during the rest of the set?

I suppose you have a NTFS partition for the Windows boot. Have you defragmented it? It could be that the files at the end of your set are more fragmented.

I'm not very familiar with Live so I wouldn't know of any Live specific issues with longer sets.

sounds like a harddrive issue. Either you have riched the maximum bandwidth of you hd towards the end of the track ( that means that your are playing more clips at once towards the end of the track) or that something is wrong with your hd.

possibility 1: a problem occured during the formating of the partition either at the factory or when you manualy did it. in this case you have no choice but to reformat.

possibility 2: the hd is defective which mean some cluster are fucked or else and you have no choice but to have it replaced, you don't want to loose stuff if any mishap occur.

possibility 3: your drive is fragmented and your virtual memory is not following fast enough(that's if your use the ram icon on the clip section for every clip.

I think it is more likely to be the first or maybe the second possibility.

I'd first defrag my system to make sure its nothing as simple as that before doing anything else.

second if the problem still occur I'd backup everything into another device and reformat the hd.

3th if the problem is still present after phase 2 i'd have it replaced.

Now this is only something to do if the exact same project has been working totally well before in the same condition. otherwise it could very much be that you reached the physical limit of your hardrive, which is easily reachable when working with audio clips on a single drive. If that's the case you might have to merge some clips.

also sampler like battery are very heavy with the virtual memory, cause less than 2 gig of ram will almost certainly make you rely on the virtual memory. which brings us to the phisical limit of the hd. so look there too

give some more details , since when does it happen ect.... what is your system .....

it could simply be that the processing power was to the max cause maybe you had some application running previously or still in the background like itunes .

I left Ableton running in my studio once, went to bed (I sleep next door to the studio) and was woken up at 3am by the harshest LOUDEST white noise spraying out of the speakers. Ableton had crashed the sound card some 6 hours after opening it. The noise was fucking awful.

It's only happened once to me. For the sake of an audiences ears, I hope it never happens to anyone doing very long Ableton sets!

Regarding the slowdown at the end of your set, it may be a plugin with a memory leak - like that old Pentium denormalise bug. The annoying thing is, turning something off, or making a change will take as long as the set lasts to find out if it makes a difference.

If you can't find the source and you're stuck with the problem, I can only suggest getting halfway through the set, mixing across to a cd deck or something, reboot the lappy and mix back.
