Hi,

Does someone use or have used one of these for goa? Please, what are your impressions?

I am thinking to buy the ATC-X to have it as my main bass maker and in the same time to have a TB303 (has different filter cartridges), but I ignore if these are suited for goa.

Hey there,
we got the original SE-1 and what to say... Its simple to use, sound is quite simple aswell but i would say its simply good! I like that machine a lot! The ATC-X is a little more difficult to handle but since most of the big american hiphop professors use it I can't wait to buy my own one. Maybe those synths are not really good for Psytrance where everything sound like plastic theese days... But for rough analog sound - KILLER!!!

i have to say that both wayan and nolightatend are completely right. I have 2 analogues... Not good for psytrance, better with VirtualAnalogue (cleaner), but for DnB or hiphop, or triphop, or techno, or ... it's great!!

I agree a bit about the SE-1 being a bit heavy sounding to fit in the mix in much trance, being a moog copy.
For phat analogue bases it's a good machine for trance as well I would say, although you can get a bit more punch with the envelopes of many VA's.

The ATC-1 on the other hand can make some very nice sounds that is easy to fit in the mix thanks to the different filter designs available.
The 2600 and SEM filters is great for trance sounds in my experience.

Thank you for your replies

This wouldn't be your tool of choice for goa if I understand then.

When goa started they were mainly using analog gear as SH-101, TB303 and TR909, and they didn't have problems of any kind, or Astral Projection as an eg. wouldn't have existed then.

I am not against VA which has its own character and can be very nice at times but I'm personnaly more excited with analog warmth.

I heard that nowadays many good producers are using the Waldorf Pulse for their bass and Fx, which is analog even if it is digitally controlled; I will finally try for one of these instead.

Thanks again!

Hi PoM,

Are you talking about the Poly in rack or the Evolver?

What is your experience with this synth and the Sherman?

Thanks.

hi, i was talking about the evolver,i heard good things about it ,if you can try it in a store... bad thing, it s not great to tweak on the synth, better to use the pc or mac editor and it s monophonic .maybe a analog filter like the sherman (hard to handle)or the mooger fooger (lowpass) can be good to color the sound of the synth you re using.you can check the roland jp 8080 for goa too

Hi PoM,

I just bought a Waldorf Pulse +, I will first give a try to this and then if I'm not convinced I will look at the Evolver, but as you say both machines do not look very pleasant to integrate in a studio (at least mine).

Sherman is something I definitely want to try, but it looks too big. They say than in a few months they will sell one in rack but of 4U!

In any case, merci pour ton aide

I had an Evolver in my studio for a few months. I did not like the interface, did not like its tone much, but liked the things you can do with the feedback.
The distortion was horrible, the analog low pass was pretty average sounding (like the Pulse's), the digital high pass is non resonant (which is annoying) and the oscillators, both analog and digital were not special (I also did not think much of the Pulse's oscillators).
The good thing is that you can import your own waveforms and that it is cheap. But for traditional analog stuff, it does not deliver...not the way an sh-101, Pro-1..etc does anyway.
It can do more complex stuff and if you dig the tone, go for it.

14-y-o-e-t: I guess you know and have tested a lot of analog gear; Would you agree that the nicest bass maker in goa would be a VA as Fregle and Spindrift say?

As a good eg., I was thinking of a Clavia modular G2 rack to design the bass, runned through something (?) to warm it, against a SH-101 or Pro-1.

The thing is that in a G2 engine you can control every little detail of your synth and sound: envelopes, depth, etc.

I start wondering.

No. I've had a few VAs, SN2, MS2000, Nord Lead, Virus B. My favourite synth for the typical single VCO saw basslines used in trance is the sh-101. Some people prefer the discrete curcuirty of the sh-09, but I love the CEM3340 VCO/IR filter combo of the sh-101.

The Nords are my favourite digital synths, but not because they sound warm. They sound very digital, but have a "balsy" digital sound, whih is what I actually like about them. The G2 is extremely flexible and has a great characteristc digital sound. I think the original Nord Modular is still great, especially value for money.

With most synths you have control over such parameters.
