ok, I hope this doesn't irritate anyone too much, but this is also my first how do you make this sound post, so please be gentle

i've been messing with the squelchy sratchy sound, and while getting some interesting results, I want to get something like this:

http://59.136.111.13/scratchylead.mp3

i'm guessing its a Nord lead, but do I need a Nord to make this sound? shouldnt it be possible on a Virus, or am I barking up the wrong tree?

here's what I came up with:

http://59.136.111.13/Virus-Squelch.mid

Feel free to use it, modify it etc, and if there are any Virus users out there, I ask for your help!

thanks in advance           Gamma Riders EP out now on iTunes and Amazon.com!

its easy..
you can do this with almost every vsti plugin(dont need a virus to make this simple sound) which have oscillator and lfo!
just choose saw waveform on the oscillator, connect the lfo to oscillator cutoff and/or osc pitch , play with envelopes attack 0 short release short sustain , play with decay , add some delay to it write the midi pattern and you are there!

in zebra vsti you can make this sound in 2 minnutes..
so on virus, its around 1:)

greets!

yes
basically it's saw wave with automation on pitch and cutoff (with HP filter and resonance)           Psy stuff : myspace.com/neyaprod

hey guys, thanks for your responses!

thats basically what i did with the patch, and pretty close, but cant seem to get the same tone as in the sample. thats why i am wondering if maybe the character of the filter is different or something like that...

> longhi
so do you think its better to leave the filter envelope along and use only the LFOs to modulate? right now I have the filter envelope modulating the filter, and a triangle LFO in envelope mode on the OSC pitch. like i said, its close, but not as cool as the sample :^(

first of all, this sample isnt so great for my taste, i have heard much better similar samples..
you can use lfo to modulate, but to achieve best result you should use 2 lfo one for the filter cutoff and one for the pitch ..also i used to choose random lfo instead of triangle or sine etc..
you also can automate, i mean manually draw the lfo rate and/or cutoff if you want to be very precise:)

as hugaw said, you should choose HP filter or maybe bandpass will work and play with resonance(avoid to add a lot, it will become disturbing)
add some distortion, some reverb to not to be too harsh, cut the disturbing ultrahigh frequencies
and at the end add autopanner to the delay

Yeh ,,, thats quite a generic lead ,,, can be emulated on almost any synth,,
The method on each synthesizer would be common ,, but since the filters and dsp coding differs in almost all synths , it can be tricky to emulate the exact same tone. This sample you uploaded has a slight glassy timbre to it (nord type like you said). So maybe you should try what longhi has suggested with the distortion and filter settings , since it can change the tone of the sound drastically.I will try and emulate this sound for u in the TI and sending u the preset for it.

happy tweaking

its 100% definetly a nord sound , very easy to make as already suggested on top but if you want the same exact tone i guess it will be the nord lead or the modular

zebra will work if you think it comes close - i have that so if you have a patch, i can analyze it

yeah its from Logic Bomb, so i figured the swedes will definitely be using a Nord. if you can emulate it, please definitely! also take a look at mine if you want, and tell me what you think

nord's HP filter is famous... it has a much better sound than the Virus HP (and i'm a Virus owner!). especially at high resonance, the Nord just keeps on giving... you can really push it and it just gets tighter and more focused.

you can emulate this slightly by experimenting with the Virus filter settings. try running filters in series with a bandpass before the HP, and scale the response so it gradually shifts upwards as the HP opens up. go easy on the resonance. and perhaps add a touch of thickening with filter saturation... be subtle here.

as for the sound itself... as everyone has pointed out, you don't *need* a Nord or a Virus to do it. any synth with saw waves, pitch and filter LFO / envelopes will be fine.

thanks man! thats a really good tip! i'll try it when I get home tonight

i have to agree with you on the Virus - its pretty great at other sounds of a different character, but when you push the HPF hard sometimes the sound entirely disappears....

i am convinced again though that synths, both analog and digital definitely have their respective characters (although the differences may be smaller in software)

ok, just wanted to follow up on this, and what i found out.

first, this wasnt really about how to get the common squelch or slider, but how to get the squelchiest of squelches

so i found that 1) even though i thought the virus would be good at this kind of sound, it is kind of so-so, at least by itself, but using a combination of band pass with highpass gets close

2) borrowed a Nord from a friend, this synth definitely has its place in psy. the HPF is unique, and really cuts through

3) CamelPhatt roooooccckkks! putting this on any synth or AU/VST gets you there. mad filters on this little beast.

4) a mix of note lengths, for the pulsating sound

at the end of the day, i think this sound depends on the filter character more than anything else. then maybe add phasing, distortion, etc           Gamma Riders EP out now on iTunes and Amazon.com!
