I think your right, the clarity of sound is key. I would rather hear intricacy instead of body wrenching power. One of the best part of Gaian Mind fest is this factor. So heres a question? Is it better to have many points of sound that aren't redlining or is it better to have a more single or dual focus system with more power, obviously a matter of opinion. What do you think?

Ok well that's a complicated question too. Power or whether you are redlining a system is not really related to how many points you use. Redlining (pushing a system over its limit) is never good, regardless of how many "points" you are using. Wherever possible, I prefer a conventional two or 4 point setup. The reason for this is that the more points you add, the more phase problems you will get, and this results in variations in the sound throughout the dancefloor. But there are times when adding additional speakers can solve problems. Note that 4 points doesn't mean just 4 speakers. When I do a 4 point setup with my system, I'm usually using 10 total speakers.
As far as the system used at GMSF, the idea of having so many points there isn't to make the sound better or more powerful. The reason is to try to put more sound on the dancefloor without annoying the neighbors.. which is a real problem there. Having so many points actually makes it sound worse. The best GM sound I've heard so far was in 2006.. that was a 4 point setup. The adding of more points each year is an attempt to make the dancefloor bigger and louder.. without making it louder at the neighbors.
But, there are times when a multi-point setup makes sense. I just installed a sound system for a new bar that is opening up and I am using 10 "points" there (in three zones), plus two points of subs.
Another thing to realize is that "points" does not mean speakers. If you go to a concert you will see usually a two point system.. but each "point" is a vertical array of 6 - 12 speaker cabinets hanging to each side. Plus multiple subwoofers. Then they might have fill systems to cover the front rows, balconies etc. So there is a lot more to how you set up a system than just number of points. If you look at the system in a large danceclub you will usually see a lot of speakers scattered around.. they may use a few major "points" but then they are filling things in, solving different problems...
To answer Tricks question from before.. about speakers stacked on the ground vs on stands. The answer is, the speakers that are reproducing the mids and highs should ALWAYS be somewhat up above head height. Whether they are stacked or put on stands doesn't matter. Maybe you have the perception that speakers on stands are worse because the less expensive and smaller systems are almost always on stands. But that's not a total rule. You can easily find huge low-quality speakers that must be stacked, and super-high-quality that will go on a stand.
In reality the use of stands or stacking depends on the situation.
When I set up my system, I almost always put my front pair of speakers on stands. I -could- stack them on top of the subwoofers.. but the subwoofers would not sound as good that way as they do the way I like to set them up. Stacking them might look better but doesn't always sound better. For example, I went to a party a while back and they had a Mackie system with SRM1530 tops and SWA1801 subs.. with the tops stacked on the subs.. because they are too top-heavy to put on a stand. That combo looks bad-ass, but it doesn't sound as good as mine.. even though I use stands. I'll take my EAW's on stands to their Mackies. Sound before looks But it is a case by case thing, every setup is different.
But the one rule that always applies is that you always want to get your mids and highs into the air, not blasting into the faces of the first row of people on the dancefloor.
Anyway I feel like this is taking too much away from discussion of the upcoming party!
I got a message from DJ Lauryn the other day.. she and Eggbot played with Karash last weekend on the west coast.. and she's saying he was really great... And I've been wanting to hear Helios for a while. I was over at the space yesterday getting some technical details worked out and it's looking good! So now I'm getting excited for this party. Not to ignore the rest of the lineup, which looks really good too...

great line up guys very diverse and well rounded. this will be epic. im really glad that Helios gets to blast NYC finally, he's been a stable rocker at our west coast events for years, always coming up with new twists on the full on funky San Francisco sound. Karash will be great , he makes some tasty twisted Swiss mountain forest sounds.
enjoy your Saturday night fun everyone . and see you soon.

By popular demand we've opened up an RSVP option for Contracosmos. If you'd like to participate in Saturday night and still get your tickets at the door, you can now reserve door tix online:
http://www.28thday.com/events
In contrast to the $15 advance ticket, the RSVP will reserve a $20 ticket for you at the door. Those with an RSVP will be e-mailed on Friday night with the venue.
We'll be accepting both RSVPs and presales until Friday 10PM. Special thanks to everyone who's already responded!

Hey guys.. here's a little update...
First of all, we are using my Light-O-Matic sound system. Not the Icarus system after all. It's already set up and sounding pretty good though I still have tweaking to do. I'm running around 11-12,000 watts, 4 point setup, and it's loud and clean. I expect it to sound even better with people in the room.
While I was working on that, the Psybotik guys were doing some cool art and it looks really great.
Karash is here, chilling out in Theo's apartment.
So everything is coming into alignment for a good party
