I tested the samsons in a store and they suck, i am not sure they were the 6/8a but I have heard from a buddy that works in music shop that the samsons generally suck.
I bought the m-audio bx8's and they "sound" good, they are however NOT representative. By that i mean the mix doenst sounds anything like it does on the bx8's when played on another sound system.
Despite the "good" sound, the bass response it not accurate, and the mid range is lacking some, and the highs are overpresent.
I would suggest the Dynaudio Passives, even the smallest ones kick ass and are representative. I got them and my mixes improved alot. And they didnt cost more than the m-audios. See if u can get a deal for the dynaudios with an amp together, its well worth it.

An friend and artist i work with, also works in a pro audio shop. Here are his msn messenger comments on the new Samsons:
prahlad says:
they suck big time
prahlad says:
heard em in shop
prahlad says:
horrid
prahlad says:
no mids
prahlad says:
just sizzle and flub
prahlad says:
those tweeters can only reproduce freqs above 8 k unleyy theyre folded like adams
prahlad says:
bass goes up to 2k imagine the mids.....
Anyway... you get the point... if you want to make good music the one thing to not save money on is monitors, very important to be able to hear what you are doing...

i have samson rubicon r5a and m-audio bx8 in my studio!
i like the clarity of samson specialy in the high freq they indeed luck some mid freqs but its not so bad as cytopia describet i can only say that in that price range you want find a monitor so good sounding same price range are m-audio bx5 and yamaha msp5 also good for the money anything else is crap!
as for bx8 they are pumping and loud as hell but... they have some serius isuess in the stereo field its very difficult to distinguish also us cytopia said nothing sounds like them on other speakers that is not always bad and it doesnt mean they sound bad but you realy need to know how they sound before being sure for your mixes.they need serius learning and lots of time spending listening to commercial mixes before fully understand its sonic behaviour .
overall i like my bx8 i know them inside out and i feel comfortabke working with rubicons cos of theyr smooth sound unlike m-audios they are not so hars and hard making long hour mixing easyer on the ears!
to finnalize my post i would suggest to listen to your mixes in every possible speaker/amp combination there is available to check your mixes before feeling comfortable of it if it sounds ok in more then 4 different combos it will sound ok almost everywhere!!

Well i agree with all these man who say Samson suck, and we speak of Resolv, Robicon are quite new and i haven't heard them yet, thou they cost as professional monitors so they must sound better than Resolv.
Generally Resolv are most unclear monitors i have ever heard and i did many monitors. Never get to these unless you think monitor can sound better than home cinema but you have money for cheap home cinema, you know these bundles come with DVDs, jeje
M-Audio BX, are ok. lack of bass, lack of seperation but they are ok, thou i won't go for BX8, these are too big, you need large room for these. I would buy bx5 if there was a need in cheap monitor.
Good luck, BX5 is the better choice, IMHO. Although you can try Resolv before you get M-Audio.

I haven't tried the samsons, but I agree that the m-audios is a bit harsh and hence tirering to work on.
But they are quite easy to get a decent mix on when you know you have to make the tweeter scream, a bit like the NS10's.
The tannoy reveals is by far the best budget speaker I used. Very pleasant non-fatiguing sound AND easy to get the mix right on. I tried a lot of monitors, and below $1000 there is no competition IMO compared to the reveals.
If you spend more I agree with cytopia that the dynaudios is exellent. The bass in their speakers is unbeatable for trance production.

The smallest passive dynaudios only cost about 600EU for a pair with out the amp, then say about 150 - 200 for a decent amp, so say 900 EU for a setup. It's worth the money for sure, good monitors are a must if you want to play music on big systems, bad monitors make life difficult... like walking in the dark... or get used ns10's..... they work good...

would you recommend the reveals over the KRK rokit 6 or the Fostex PM1's?

I haven't actually worked with neityher of those so I cannot say from experience.
I did work in a shop having pretty much all current models available for A/B comparasion, but even by listening loads of times with different material I find it very hard to tell how good a monitor is without actually sitting down and mixing on them.
To listen for the one that sounds nicest is a very bad idea IMO.
About the rokits I heard a lot of mixed opinions from people using them and a couple of producers who's judgement I really trust think they are not very good for trance.
I would be surprised if the Fostex was anywhere near as good as the reveals considering the usual sound quality of fostex products, but thats just a guess since I haven't used them.

Normally it's recommended that you spend the same amount on the amp as the speakers to get the best sound for the money.
If you look at prices of active vs. passive speakers you will see that the price for the active is usually about the double because they have amps with a quality to match the speakers.
I have been A/B comparing speakers using different amps, and the difference is indeed very big dependent on the quality of the amp.
I personally for sure would much rather go for a pair of passive revals with a quality amp than a pair of dynaudios with a cheap amp.

I'm from pakistan but i'm studying in switzerland..I have lots of friends in the UK so they could probably ship them to me..i don't think you have to pay taxes on used items, or do u?
So would you agree that they are a good buy at this price nolightatend? I have to buy monitors and i'm really confused can't seem to make up my mind..Think i will probably save up and buy the Dynaudio Bm5 passive at the end..But if not these which one's would you buy with a budget of 500 euros?
