It seems to me like psytrance producers sample from just about everything /but/ other psytrance artists, and the few times I've heard it happen, I've seen people complain about it.

What is the general attitude about this?

I've been listening some dub, electro, dnb.
(becuase i'm learning to DJ with slower music)
Its mostly all a bunch of sampling on massive scale. i must admit, i'm not for it. -a bit lame imo, with some rare cases that proves extraordinary, like 'parov stelar' whom i;ve just became acquainted to. he uses the live saxophone. AND the best i've heard so far is 'bird of prey' and its far better than the rest becuase its mostly synthesized.

pystrance is original in that sounds(instruments) are created from synthesizers (mostly).

i think its funny but like the unexpected cd skip effect in songs it would be a fad quickly stamped out

u mean people will point out where samples was used?

its more often not that obvious. I dont really care about it. just like to listen to something totally unique every now and again,.

This track starts with drunken slurred voice saying "Music is vibration". I’ve heard the same sample (without slurring) on some classic Goa track but don't remember what it was. Don’t know if that counts, as both authors could just use the same sample from some well-known source. But I suspect that Puoskari deliberately referred to the old-school track here.

Good sample work is more art than nice synthesized pads or sth.

I've got a pretty funny recording of Mubali on absynth that's already made it into one of my tracks.... but you'd never be able to recognize it if I didn't tell you

i can not say which is more artsy.
but i'm certain it takes more caring work to synthesize your own sound than to sample. (cut and stretch a piece) .almost like plagiarism.
unless the sample is something you made yourself. like recorded instrument.
OR
i realize you can take a sample, and with great care, alter it beyond recognition until it is unique. and this i can appreciate as art.

no good or bad here,,
Only the sentiment of creating something unique.

I dont think so.. look at prodigys way of sampling..you can synthesize a pad in a minute .You can find the right sample for a year and than to work it out is an art for it sefl that not many really know how to.
It is not just to take a sample..this are for rookies, sample banks and such.. to find a sample on one uses and cut it right that is it.pad a bit of adsrrr ,filters how you like and maybe some plug ins for inserts and you there hehehe ..not that unique..than more about the notes or melody or chords maybe..however..
btw Axis Mundi I now know how it sounds..that youtube video right?..I should take a deeper listen to your works and than find out..can be fun

btw 2 elisdee both ways can be heavy for sure..but to find a great sample is like a needle in a haystack sometimes

Unless it's Morpheus saying "Free your mind" for the millionth time.

P.S. I think both ways can be artistic (and difficult) or lame (and predictable).

samples that sound like the original sample suck

using a sample sound like you would use a waveform in synthesis is what I consider to be "good sampling"           http://soundcloud.com/ascensionsound

for me working with samples to create something new is way much easier then creating new unique sounds. that's why i heavily use both :-D

yes, and maybe one more osculator or a few more layers and ,maybe some complex routing and matrixes like a sublte lfo routed to pitch and pan. and another layer with some grain saturation. some more subtle filters and envolopes. and some more velosity tweakes and voila. finally, after much care, you have what you've been working for. easy
A slap bass sound that is just perfect for a song called 'Beuguiling Illusions' made in Zebra.

you could have just cut a bass guitar up and used that. but now you have something totally unique and awesome.

lots of respect to ya Bill
