Hi folks. Can anyone help me out with recording audio from a DVD video in the PC's DVD drive? What software or settings will let me do this? I'm using Ableton and Sound Forge with an ESI Julia soundcard.
With my old Soundblaster card there was a setting in its software to 'record what you hear', but I don't have that anymore with the Julia. I'd ideally like to be able to simply play a DVD on the PC and record the audio in realtime using Sound Forge. I don't wanna have to rip the whole DVD or anything like that.
Any help much appreciated.

I'm not familiar with your ESI Julia card but are there no mixer channel from the soundcard with signal available (when you play a movie for example in Windows) in the "record window" in SF? You can browse/choose which channel you wish to record from in the recording window. Are there none there available that works?

Scobbah: I'm using Sound Forge 5, which is pretty old, but there's no 'channel selection' in the record window.
And Aeon, I did do a search but didn't find anything that seemed relevant. Thanks for the link, but I said that 'I don't wanna have to rip the whole DVD or anything like that'. If I do end up having to, that page looks like it could be helpful though.

Ah, I worked it out. I had to patch MME outs 1 and 2 to MME input in Julia's Direct Wire. |

That doesn't work on all sound cards.
A lot of external firewire/USB soundcards don't have a "record from WAV out" or whatever function, you need to know how to use the mentioned applications that can rip the audio channel as data.
I was chagrined to discover this - the "wav out" thing is pretty much standard on PCI and crappy built in soundcards, I was blown away to discover my first USB audio device couldn't do the same thing. http://soundcloud.com/aeon604

don't use too "dirty" or low quality samples with many background noises....the rest is EQ and noise reduction in Sound Forge, thats what i do
