There are obviously a lot of psy tracks out there that sample vocal snips from movies, aswell as various other melodic grabs that might not even be tweaked or disguised at all. I was wondering whether or not it's common for independent artists or labels have their samples properly authorised.

I know about 'white label' releases (not so much with psy), but I'm talking about officially released stuff.

I'm not tryin to be a 'narc' or anything, but I'm genuinely curious. What would it cost to liscence a vocal snippet for an independent track, for example? Does anyone usually bother since it's only going to go out to such a relatively small audience?

Cool, thanks panic, but there's nothing in there about the cost of doing it legitimate. For example, would many labels shy away from a track that has obvoius copyright issues with any obvious samples?

only if they ripped the essence out of the song (that means, when they use the main hook from the song) they have to pay royalties (like madonna's label has to pay for the ripped off hook they used in her new hit single)

Fregle's info is not correct. Legally speaking you have to pay for ANY sampling, no matter what it is or how long it is. In reality few do, but international copyright laws are pretty clear on the issue. Maybe no one will readily go after you unless you steal the essence of a track, but legally speaking you new clearance for any samples of anything not in the public domain (which is just about everything out there).
